Help Ben, wrongly jailed 34 years, restart life

Donation protected
Ben Spencer, wrongly imprisoned for 34 years, needs a car and training for his future career.

YOU did it! You helped Ben reach his $20,000 goal! Thank you for believing in Ben, and for investing in his future. You are changing the system for the better, one life at a time.

Thank you everyone for your amazing generosity. We are raising our goal to $20,000. This was the amount we originally wanted for Ben's car and career training. Now, thanks to you, we can reach higher!

In 1987, Ben Spencer, 22-years-old and newly married with a baby on the way, was arrested for the robbery and death of a white man in Dallas. There was no evidence implicating Spencer, a Black man, except witnesses who were motivated by $25,000 in reward money -- and who lied on the stand. A jury convicted him and sentenced him to life. Twenty years later, a Dallas judge ruled Ben was actually innocent and deserved a new trial, but the higher court refused.

The Atlantic, NPR, the Dallas Morning News, and other news organizations have reported on Ben's case for years. After an extensive investigation, the District Attorney found that Ben did not receive a fair trial, and he walked out of prison on March 12, 2021.

Now, 34 years later, Ben is trying to jump-start his life, reconnect with his ex-wife whom he plans to re-marry, and finally get to know his now-adult son. Ben needs a reliable car to get to his work as a garage attendant, and he needs training to begin a new career. His family and friends are trying to raise $20,000 for a car and technical training, perhaps to pursue a career as an automotive technician, a natural path for a man who from a young age has had a passion for working on cars.

We can’t give him back the past three decades, but we can help make his next three decades abundant and meaningful.

Thank you so much for your support.
