Help Bee Release her first Album
Hey there,
Here is a wee shpeil about me and what has brought me to reaching out to you for support.
Below are a couple of live video performances ;
My name is Bee Asha Singh, I am a writer and a spoken word artist born and raised in Edinburgh.
I grew up between homes with my Scottish Mother in the countryside and my Indian Father in the City. My mixed heritage is an integral part of who I am, and pervades all of my work, most significantly in the insight it has provided into liminal space, where all art springs from.
Myself and two school friends formed The Honey Farm in 2016, a rap trio focused on tackling gender inequality by taking a playful approach to composition that was raw, sexually explicit and fun.
In 2017 I was raped in Thailand. Performing with my band became triggering, so I wanted to find another way to express the turmoil I was facing. I began to write and perform spoken word poetry.
In 2019, I was the subject of the BBC documentary, Spit it Out. It crucially provided a platform to share my story of using my creative practice as a way to overcome my sexual trauma, which gave me the confidence to start my solo career.
During the pandemic, I have been working on my debut album, compiling work that represents the journey I have taken. The vital stages of who I used to be, and who I have become; specifically because of what it means to be a woman - being subjected to something that ultimately leads to your strengthening.
I am need of funding to record this album properly. I want to express what it is like to be a woman in a world where men are afforded the excuse of “boys will be boys”. A world where women have been forced to excuse others' behaviours, and carry the brunt of responsibility to allow for others’ comfort.
Your help would give me this incredible opportunity as I am currently working full time for the charity, Intercultural Youth Scotland, with young people from black and brown communities, running writing/rap workshops, promoting leadership skills and providing anti-racist education. I was scouted for my position in 2019 whilst on the stage, performing poetry at a local bar. Since dedicating my time to the charity sector I have had to juggle my writing, recording and performing, which has honed my administrative skills as a creative practitioner.
I want to release an 8-track mixtape that interlaces spoken word, rap, instrumentation and singing. The mixtape will feature an eclectic blend of music: intimately fragile pieces played on the ukulele, acapela anthems of spoken word, dark and honest Grime, and collaborations with a plethora of incredible local musicians.
The money I receive will go towards paying for the beats uses, studio time, mixing and mastering of the album, paying for album art and marketing and promotion. I would also like to make a music video so any left over money will go towards paying for cinematographers, directors, set designers, props etc.
