Hi, my name is Mandy; we set up this account to try to find a way to give back to close friends of ours in need of a lot of love and support. Becky and J-dub are an integral part of our "dance family." They have poured so much love and energy into so many aspiring dancers. As many parents know, it takes a "village" to raise our children, and Becky and J-dub are members of MANY villages. Dance is not just about the sport, but the family that comes with it.
Becky started to feel sick with the flu around 3/7/25 while traveling for work. When she returned from the trip, her symptoms became very different than just the regular flu. She started to feel numbness and tingling in her arms and legs. She also became very weak and could barely walk a few steps. She went to the ED and was admitted to the hospital for the first time from 3/14 to 3/18; they performed a lumbar puncture to rule out Guillain-Barré syndrome. After a few days in the hospital, the medical team concluded that it wasn't Guillain-Barré syndrome but that she needed follow-ups with a rheumatologist and neurosurgeon because she had a bulging disc in her cervical spine, and they also suspected an autoimmune disorder might be attacking her neuromuscular system. She was discharged home and only able to get around with a walker. She struggled to get in with appropriate specialties to get further testing done, such as an EMG, in order to test for neuromuscular conditions.
She continued to get weaker and went back to the hospital on 3/19. After 24 hours of tests and lab work, they have now landed on two concerning potential diagnoses: delayed onset Guillain-Barré syndrome after a viral illness or an autoimmune condition such as Lupus. Both are autoimmune-type conditions - the immune system has gotten out of control and has begun to attack her nerves and muscles.
The treatment for either of these conditions in this acute phase is intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, or IV IG, to reset the immune system and stop it from attacking her nerves and muscles. Becky has to be in the hospital for at least 6 days of IV IG treatment. The medical team isn't sure yet if more invasive treatment will be needed, such as plasmapheresis. Regardless, Guillain-Barré and Lupus both involve a long road to recovery and lifetime follow-up.
Becky and J-dub have 3 children - Javon, Josh, and their youngest baby girl Jocelyn. Becky's family is overwhelmed by the sudden, unexpected, and scary diagnosis.
The future is uncertain but I do know one thing - Becky and J-dub have an army behind them. Please consider donating to help them out with current and future medical expenses, bills, food, costs of living, etc.
