Help Becky Heal
Hello. My name is Jill Taylor. On the morning of Friday, July 9th, my cousin Rebecca (Becky) Moody, who is like a sister to me, slipped and fell while getting out of a hot tub. She was vacationing with her 14 year old daughter in Asheville, NC. When she slipped, she fell back into decorative rocks and broke her neck. At the time of the injury, she had no feeling below her chest. She was unable to even nod her head. They transported her to Chapel Hill Hospital where she immediately underwent surgery to repair her damaged spinal column. The amazing doctors were able to realign her spinal column but informed us it was up to her body to heal the damage done to the spinal cord. She was taken off a ventilator on Sunday afternoon and has regained feeling from her belly button up. She can move her torso and arms, but has no control of her fingers at this time. Although she can feel some pressure in her legs, as well as temperature, she still has no ability to move them. She has regained all control of her bowels and bladder. The doctors are amazed at how quickly she is progressing, but if you know her, you are probably not surprised at all. She is a fighter. Her bravery during this time has been extremely inspirational to me! Today, she was accepted to the Shepard Center in Atlanta, GA. It is the most highly rated spine center in the nation. Apparently it is extremely hard to be accepted to this center because all of the nurses came into her room to congratulate her. She will be flown to the center this Friday where she will begin her road to recovery. We have been told she will be there for at least 6-8 weeks and will then need someone to stay with her 24/7 for at least one month when she returns home. We have also been advised to begin preparing her home with the accommodations she will need when she returns, such as a ramp and bathroom accessibility. Although she has great insurance, being a single mother, she is extremely worried about how she will financially recover from her situation. The ICU bills alone will be astronomical. We keep telling her not to worry about the financial component right now, but instead to simply focus on recovering. As we all know, that is much easier said than done. The many prayers and support that she is receiving from so many people are what is keeping her going. I know that she feels every one of them.
