Help Becki Get Her New Liver and Focus on Healing

Hi everyone, my name is Matthew Howard. I dread fundraising, but I’m stepping up because a member of my family is in need. Specifically, I’m reaching out on behalf of my incredibly strong sister-in-law, Becki, and my brother, Mike.

If you’ve ever met Becki, you know that she is an extremely caring, giving person. I’ll never forget how, when my husband, Craig, died, Becki was there with both emotional support and the offer of the use of their home for a memorial gathering. Her hospitality, smile, and laughter have been freely shared with so many. She is the first to offer support, and the last one to think she’d need to ask for it herself. Now, she needs our community's help.

The Urgent Challenge: Building Strength for Transplant

Becki has been diagnosed with end-stage liver disease and is in urgent need of a liver transplant. For the past 6 weeks, Becki has battled serious medical challenges that have left her unable to work. She is suffering from encephalopathy—a serious condition where toxins in her blood affect the functioning of her brain, causing her mind to be foggy and unclear. This is a severe complication of her liver failure.

She is currently at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. However, the liver transplant board met today (November 19, 2025) and determined that she is too frail to safely undergo surgery now. The team wants her to go home and focus on building her strength and recovery capacity. She will be re-evaluated in 3 months. To achieve this, she will first be moving to a rehabilitation facility with the hope that after a couple of weeks she’ll be strong enough to return home with Mike to continue gathering enough strength for surgery. Your support will help Becki achieve this goal.

Why We Need Your Support

The medical bills are already overwhelming, and the path ahead is long. Becki has already been on leave for over 2 months and will be out of work indefinitely—first for the rehabilitation/strengthening phase, then for the transplant, and then for the minimum of 8 weeks post-surgery recovery. Liver transplants can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars before insurance.

We recently learned that Becki does not have short-term disability insurance. This means that every day she is out of work adds severe financial stress. This fundraiser’s purpose is to help relieve some of the financial stress from out-

of-pocket medical bills, co-pays, medications, household expenses (like mortgage and utilities), and everyday living costs, so Becki can focus on healing without the weight of worry.
