Sadowsky Guitars, Timeless and Cutting Edge
“I just do what I do, and try to do it better than I’ve ever done.” Roger Sadowsky
When challenged with delivering the nuances musicians desire from their guitars, luthier Roger Sadowsky responds through expert craftsmanship to devise solutions that allow the musicians to elevate their musicality, giving them the finest tools to make their sound unique and extraordinary.
Beckett Arts Project, a documentary film production company in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is producing a documentary on the life and legacy of Roger Sadowsky, a noted luthier, who has been providing and customizing quality instruments and repairs in his New York shop since 1979.
This film will explore what has driven Sadowsky over the past 40 years to connect with the music and musicians to produce the famed Sadowsky guitar for a list of admiring musicians such as Verdine White, Will Lee, The Rolling Stones, Marcus Miller, Steve Miller, Jim Hall, Prince, and Paul Simon, to name a few. They revere him as a master builder who will stand the test of time, and that his guitars will go down in history as one of the finest instruments ever made. His drive for excellence is powered by a desire to connect to the music and musicians.
He was born in the Bronx, raised in Queens and attended college in western New York. After graduation, he enrolled in graduate school at Rutgers University, working on a PhD majoring in psychobiology. With a real love for folk music, he began playing guitar his junior year and started hanging out with a group of folk musicians. A folk festival he attended in 1969 was a catalyst in his decision to quit school and pursue the unfamiliar and daunting world of instrument-making. As he honed his skills, his reputation grew and he was able to open up his own shop in 1979. His initial guitar, the Dr. Frets Guitar, was built at this time, and later became the famed Sadowsky Guitar.
The film will depict Roger’s journey beginning as an apprentice, repairing guitars for studio musicians and touring personnel, to his achievement as a master luthier through the development of the Sadowsky Guitar. To complete the filming, the production crew plans to travel back to New York, Nashville, and Los Angeles for interviews and other pick-up shots.
The total cost to produce this film is $65,000, that includes production and post-production costs. Once completed, the film will be distributed globally through streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Peacock.
We are currently in production on this feature film based upon Sadowsky’s life-long reputation as being one of the industry’s master craftsman. His greatest joy is in personally dealing with the player, and seeing the satisfaction it brings to the musicians who make music on one of his instruments.
