Hi, my name is Natasha and my oldest and dearest friend Bec has brain cancer.
Bec is the loving mother of a gorgeous four year old son, wife to her amazing husband Gavin, she’s highly intelligent, a formidable public prosecutor, a fierce and loyal friend, and at just 34 years old she’s now facing the unthinkable.
Two and a half years ago Bec collapsed at a friend’s wedding and was rushed to hospital for scans for a suspected concussion. What doctors found was earth shattering. Bec was diagnosed with an Oligodendroglioma - an incurable brain tumour. She was able to have surgery within weeks and the surgeons removed as much of the tumour as they could, but she will need treatment to slow the growth of the remaining tumour for the rest of her life. She will also need another surgery, likely within the next 5-10 years, after which she’s been told she won’t be able to work due to some form of intellectual impairment.
In a silver lining to this tragedy - Bec has been offered a lifeline in the form of a drug called Vorasidenib, which can slow and even stop the growth of tumours like Bec’s. She’s currently on a trial for the medication, but this will end later this year. When it does, this life-saving treatment will cost her approximately $100,000 a year - an astronomical cost that will likely force her and her husband to have to drain their supers and sell their house.
Vorasidenib has previously been rejected for inclusion on the PBS, due to how new it is and a lack of long term data being available. But Bec doesn’t have time to wait for the long term data. This drug is proven to be working for her and so many like her and she needs it now for a chance at a future - to be able to watch her son grow up.
Please donate anything you can to help assist in Bec’s ongoing treatment costs - which will include regular medical appointments, her second surgery and the price of Vorasidenib if it is still not PBS listed by the time her trial ends.
Please also take a moment to sign this petition to push for Vorasidenib to be added to the PBS.
If you’d like to know more, Bec has also shared her story on A Current Affair. You can watch here.
Thank you!
