Help Bear get emergency surgery after infection
Donation protected
If you know Bear you know he is the sweetest, most loyal & loving boy there is. And if you know James and I, you know that our animals are everything to us. Especially our baby Bear.
4 weeks ago Bear had a $5,500 surgery on his leg after discovering he had completely ruptured the cruciate ligament in his leg. This is called a tplo surgery - a very invasive procedure with a very long recovery. Despite the costs, we just wanted to see our boy walk without pain again so we went ahead with the surgery. Luckily we have insurance and they were able to cover a small portion of the first surgery. However, the first surgery filled the yearly allowance for this particular type of injury.
The surgery went seemingly well and Bear was on his way to recovery until about 2/3 days ago when he started acting funny and we noticed some increased swelling around the leg that was operated on. Throughout the day yesterday it was rapidly getting worse so last night we took him to the emergency vet. They instantly knew it was infected. After spending hours waiting for some answers they revealed the infection is most likely in and around the actual plates that were implanted into his leg which means he will need to have the same surgery again to pull the plates out and clear the infection before it spreads.
He was kept overnight last night at a fee of $2000 (extra fees because of the Easter long weekend). This only covered him being in their care until 8am this morning & will be another $2000 to keep him there throughout the day. If we took him back into our care they said there is a high chance his leg would have to be amputated due to the severity of the infection. They have had to call in an emergency surgeon to assess and hopefully get him in for surgery which will cost us another $5000 out of pocket.
So overall we are looking at another vet bill of over +$10,000.
Asking for help is the last thing we wanted to do but at this point, we would do anything to make sure our Bearsy boy will be able to walk again. There's nothing that makes him happier than the beach and walkies. If you can donate anything or even just share this for us we will be forever appreciative.
We hope to get our boy back on track ASAP with the big goofy smile everyone loves and knows him for.
Thanks,
Maddie & James.
