My name is Barrington Kamicka and I live in Jamaica. I am a husband, proud father of three, and loving grandfather (Opa) to two grandsons. I am sharing my story with a heavy heart - literally and emotionally. I have been diagnosed with advanced heart disease, and after years of declining health, my doctors have delivered the news that changed everything.
I need a heart transplant to survive.
My Journey
What started as shortness of breath and extreme fatigue turned into a frightening reality. Simple tasks—walking across a room, climbing a few steps, even getting out of bed some days—have become overwhelming. My heart is failing, and each day is a battle against symptoms that don’t give me a moment of relief.
With an Ejection Fraction (EF) of 25–30%, my heart is pumping only a fraction of the blood a healthy heart should. This means my body is not getting the oxygen and nutrients it needs, putting me at high risk for sudden cardiac arrest, organ damage, and worsening heart failure. There is no medication or procedure left that can restore my heart’s strength; as such I have been referred to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, USA for a heart transplant.
A transplant is my only chance at life.
Why I’m Asking for Help
While the total long-term cost of a heart transplant is estimated at approximately USD 1.6 million, I am currently facing an immediate and urgent expense of USD 60,000 to cover the pre-transplant evaluations, testing, and specialist appointments required to determine whether I qualify for the transplant.
This is only the beginning of the process. Once I am approved and listed, additional costs will follow, including:
- Travel, temporary lodging, and transportation near the transplant center
- The transplant procedure and hospitalization
- Lifelong post-transplant medications, which can cost thousands of dollars per month
- Home medical equipment and ongoing follow-up care
- Loss of income during recovery and in the months leading up to surgery
These financial demands are overwhelming at a time when my focus and energy are devoted to staying alive long enough to receive a donor heart.
My Reason to Keep Fighting
I want to keep fighting. I want to live long enough to experience moments I’ve dreamed of—watching my family grow, celebrating milestones, enjoying the simple things I once took for granted. I want the chance to breathe without fear, to walk without pain, to live without the constant reminder that time may be running out.
I want the chance to live.
How You Can Help
Every donation, no matter the amount, brings me one step closer to the lifesaving Heart transplant I urgently need. If you are unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser is another powerful way to help.
Thank you for reading my story, for caring, and for offering hope during the darkest season of my life. Your kindness truly means more than words can ever express.
With all my heart,
Barrington Kamicka
