Help Barry Survive Cancer
Donation protected
Hi People!
A dear friend we know and love, Barry Hunt, has been off from work, and will remain so, already for nearly 5 months, more or less, including time off leading up to, during and after cancer diagnosis and treatment! Recovery is going well, thank goodness.
Nonetheless, the lost wages during this time makes things very tough financially. Everything adds up quickly - cost of care, of any meds not covered, etc. etc., not to mention daily food and living expenses plus future, well you can imagine the stress, adding lots more worry for Barry.
Barry has family who love and need him, and friends who adore and are inspired by him. He adds meaning to life for so many of us, professionally and as a friend.
As most of us would have a hard time with a week of no pay, let alone almost 5 months plus more upcoming, some of us were thinking we'd start a GoFundMe!!!! Barry has given us the green light to do this. A small team of us has organized this, I’m just the person doing initial set up, his son will be in charge of it, including the updates, financials, etc. Every contribution large and small helps!
If you like the ease of GoFundMe, here is the link!
Or of course you can donate directly to Barry.
Goal 10,000!
Simple scenario:
100 people X $20 = 2000
60 people X 50 = 3000
50 people X 100 = 5000
This would add to 10,000!
You do the math lol, if you can do even 5, that's 5 more to help pay medical and living expenses now!
Thank you!!!!! <3<3<3

And now a note from Barry:
I want to thank Pavla for offering to set up this GoFundMe to assist in paying for my cancer treatments. It can feel a little weird to ask for help but this will reduce a burden for my family. I want to say that no one reading this should feel pressured or guilty if they cannot help. I feel very fortunate in many ways and know that many are in worse situations than myself. My close family alone has two others in treatment. I am lucky to have insurance that covered the majority of the costs.
That said, there are very few federal or state protections for adjunct faculty, since we are held to working part-time, usually at more than one school. I am luckier than most to work for a state college with good healthcare options. I also have had generous support from my supervisors that I will have jobs to return to in January. Again, there are no official protections for that job security. It is at the discretion of the Deans and Principles. I will also be in danger of losing my insurance next year because of missing a full term of classes but I am prepared to tackle that problem as needed. Oregon has excellent public health care.
What I am facing now is the prospect of increasing debt with the unpaid medical costs that exceed what savings I applied to my first round of bills. Again lucky, I am receiving unemployment, which covers my mortgage and basic bills but falls short of food, other bills and modern “necessities” like cell phones. I have always planned to make do and get through this, paying it off over time, but any help you want to offer will be appreciated. Though I am on the good side of recovery, I cannot go back to work until mid-January.
All in all, I feel very lucky. My prognosis is very good, I have completed the treatment plan and I have promise that I can go back to work. Thank you to my family; Erin, Jackson, Woody and Olivia, for helping order my life and home, getting me to the doctor and keeping me fed. Indiana family for prayers. Lorraine also for doctor visits. Nan, Hailey and Catherine for keeping me fed too. Visits and food from Jim. Calls and cards and flowers from friends and colleagues. The doctors and nurses working now and in the future for my wellness. All the really good advice and deep thoughts from people with past experience. All those that helped me take time off from my teaching, including Lorraine, Julie, Hailey and Luke, those at Pacific Crest and PCC. And those in the theater community that helped support this transition and our need to postpone production for a time. Thanks everyone. Best wishes to any and everyone still on this road in their own lives.
