Hi, my name is Angela. I've been married to Barry for nearly 25 years (this month). He is the kindest most loving person I've ever met and I fell in love with him from across the room when I first saw him over 26 years ago at a job I was starting. This year, on January 22, he went to the ER with what we thought was Covid. During his testing the doctors found he had double pneumonia and a platelet count of 5,000, which should be between 150,000-450,000. He was immediately admitted for treatment and further testing. He had a Bone Marrow Biopsy on 1-27-22 and was found to have MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome) which is a form of Blood/Bone Marrow Cancer. His body is not creating mature blood cells, mainly platelets, so his blood will not clot. He had a port placed on 1-28-22 and started Chemo in the hospital four days later on 1-31-22. He will have Chemo 5 days in a row, every 4 weeks and just completed his second round. So far he's received 16 units of platelets and has to have his levels checked twice weekly. He is seeing two Hematologist/Oncologists and they are working together to get him the best treatment possible. One is local and the other is at Moffitt in Tampa. We are hoping that he will be eligible for a Bone marrow transplant as that is the only "cure" for this Syndrome. If he is eligible, we're hoping he can find a match relatively soonas he is very advanced in this. MDS can also become AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) which he is also being checked for because he is in the HIGH category of MDS. I am having to miss a lot of work and I have used all my PTO so it is putting a strain on us between the cost of the appointments and the travel expenses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
