Help Barrie to continue fighting Animal Cruelty

It is with a very heavy heart that begins this GoFundMe page for a very special and humble man.

I first met Barrie in 1985. He was the Chief Senior lnspector at RSPCA Vic for 15 years investigating animal cruelty at the highest level. Barrie created the position of Animal Rescue Officer within the inspectorate and promoted me to that role. As my new boss he guided me into my life’s career rescuing animals for the last 39 years  We both left on the same day back in 1990. Barrie has been my mentor and close friend ever since.  

 

Barrie is the agent for the Animal Cruelty Hotline 1800 751 770 in Victoria funded by Animal Liberation NSW for over 14 years.  Barrie continues 24/7 to take calls around Australia.

 

Barrie’s beloved wife of over 60 years. Joanie sadly passed away in November 2023. He has been devastated by her loss and has not been the same man since. I personally moved and funded his sea change to Saint Leonards after Joanie’s passing, to a family member who was supporting and looking after Barrie in his new life. This family member last week was hospitalised and diagnosed with a brain tumour and will unfortunately no longer be able to support Barrie with his new life on the other side of Port Phillip Bay and we need to bring him back home.

 

Twice a week Barrie drives via the sea ferry to visit Joanie’s grave. Years ago they were robbed of their life savings and as a consequence he continues to rent.

 

This Gofundme is to help Barrie’s move back to Cranbourne where he lived for the last 20 years. He knows the area and more importantly he will be close to Joanie.  It will also be easier for him to continue fighting against animal cruelty as he will be closer to visit sale yards as he has done for many decades. He will then be 15 minutes from where I live, to keep in close proximity with Barrie.

 

The hope is sufficient funds will be raised to move him back and help him get back onto his feet and with the cost of living/renting for the next 12 months.

 

Often it has only been Barrie’s kindness and wisdom at the end of the phone that has provided desperate people with comfort and advice.  He has worked to stop cruelty his entire life 60 yrs and in so doing, he tirelessly helps humans.

 

He is beloved in the animal welfare sector and now it is time for us to give back to Barrie. Australia is in the grip of financial constraints but anything you are able to give will help this wonderful man. Since Joanie died his life has been met with challenge after challenge and as compassionate people please contribute to making his load lighter. Barrie is an octogenarian, please help make his later years less fraught.
