Help Barbara relocate & replace her belongings

On Tuesday, April 20th at approximately 9 a.m. a fire erupted on 37th street and Avenue U. It took 14 firetrucks and dozens of firefighters over 3 hours to get control of the fire that has left the mother of my best friend (Elena Safier - A teacher at Edward R. Murrow High School for the past 25 years) without her home where she has shared years of happy memories with her family. The picture shown is the last birthday celebration she had with them in her home.
Barbara Huerta, 81 years of age, has spent years creating wonderful memories in her home with her grandchildren, daughter, son-in-law and neighbors. The fire which began on the roof above the landlord's apartment, due to the negligence of a contractor who was replacing the roof, is now homeless and everything she had is gone. Though she is staying with her daughter and her family temporarily she will need to find a new apartment and start over. Thankfully, they have found a new apartment for her which is still located near her children and grandchildren. Barbara suffers from sever arthritis and is not able to travel long distances on her own. For safety, she needs to be located near her family for help. On a personal note, one of her grandchildren, Gabriel, who is Down Syndrome, relies heavily on her presence on a daily basis.
The new place, which is much smaller, will cost $500 more per month, which Elena and her family will need to subsidize. Her previous apartment was rent stabilized and it is impossible to find another apartment in that price range in Marine Park. It is going to be a large financial burden to purchase all new furniture and various other essentials such as a bed, mattress, dressers, couch, dining table, chairs, television, sheets, towels, bathroom necessities, clothing (tops, pants, shoes, coat, jacket, hat, etc.), toiletries, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, blender, dishes, cups, pots, pans, bake ware, computer, telephone and food).
Any assistance that you can provide Barbara begin again would be greatly appreciated.
On behalf of Barbara, Elena and the rest of the family...thank you for your generosity and humanity.
