We’re raising funds to help our friend Barbara care for her two beloved dogs while she recovers from major back surgery complications — and we could really use your support.

Barbara has been through a tough year. What was supposed to be a straightforward back surgery in 2024 has led to four additional operations, chronic pain, and a serious bone infection that’s left her unable to walk. She's been in and out of hospitals and a skilled nursing facility, working hard with doctors and physical therapists to regain her mobility.

She’s facing all of this without nearby family or any support. After losing her son to suicide, her two dogs — Jasper and Baxter — have become her closest companions and greatest comfort.

While she’s been recovering from her (hopefully final) surgery in the hospital, my husband and I have stepped in to care for Jasper and Baxter. Jasper is doing great with regular walks, dropping 5 pounds and becoming more relaxed and happy. Baxter, who is 16, blind, and has dementia, needs a quiet, familiar space, so we’ve kept them both in Barbara’s home — which means a lot of driving back and forth to make sure they’re safe and cared for.

We’ve done everything we can, but we can’t keep up with the 30+ hours of care each week while also working full time. We’re paying short-term help to get us through the next two weeks, but Barbara will need more support when she returns home.

Here’s where your donation can make a real impact:

$300-800 will fund 10-25 professional dog walks for Jasper during Barbara’s recovery, giving her time to heal while keeping him healthy and active.

$200 will cover the cost of a private cremation for Baxter when the time comes (likely very soon) — a small kindness for someone who’s already endured deep loss.

Barbara has always worked hard and managed on her own. But right now, she needs a little help. Your support, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful difference in her life and the lives of the two dogs she loves most.
