Help Bambi Get Life-Saving Brain Surgery

I'm a volunteer with Lurcher SOS , a rescue dedicated to saving and rehoming Lurchers, Greyhounds, Salukis, Whippets, and other Sighthounds. Over the years, I've seen firsthand the incredible work this small charity does—but right now, we need your help to save a young lurcher who needs urgent brain surgery.

Bambi has come such a long way in such a short time. When she arrived at LurcherSOS, she was a nervous little soul, unsure of the world around her. But thanks to the love and patience of her foster family, she’s blossoming into a joyful, affectionate dog. She follows her foster siblings’ lead, loves zooming around the garden in the mornings, and has even found comfort in the warmth of an open fire.

When Bambi came to rescue, her foster mum noticed she was blind in one eye, and exhibited repetitive spinning behavior, which becomes uncontrollable at times, leading to frequent toilet accidents. Keeping her calm reduces the spinning, but managing her symptoms without proper treatment is difficult.

After extensive tests, carried out thanks to the help of all of the donations to our previous fundraiser, Bambi has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition where fluid accumulates on the brain. The cause is unknown, but vets believe it will continue to worsen without intervention. If left untreated, the increasing pressure on her brain could lead to severe brain damage or even prove fatal.

The solution for Bambi is urgent brain surgery to place a shunt that will drain the excess cerebrospinal fluid safely into her body. This procedure gives her the best chance at a full, pain-free life. While all surgeries carry risks, Bambi is young, strong, and full of life—her odds of recovery are good. With this operation, we hope to see improvement in her spinning, walking, and overall well-being.

The surgery will cost £2,400, and there is a possibility that she may need a revision surgery later, which would cost an additional £1,500.

As a small, volunteer-run rescue, LurcherSOS relies entirely on donations to give dogs like Bambi the medical care they desperately need. Recently, we had to fundraise for five dogs at once, including Bambi’s diagnostic tests. Now that those dogs are taken care of, we’re faced with this unexpected but necessary surgery for Bambi, and we need your help to make it happen.

Lurcher SOS is a Suffolk-based rescue dedicated to saving and rehoming Lurchers, Greyhounds, Salukis, Whippets, and other Sighthounds. Now in our 15th successful year, we were founded in 2010 by Lauraine (Laurie) Harkness, with a mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abused, abandoned, and neglected dogs.
