Bailey was an amazing 5th grade teacher at Phenix City Elementary School. Bailey’s life took an unexpected and devastating turn when a student ran her over at work, while teaching at PCES, leading to a Traumatic Brain Injury and within a week she had to have fluid drained off of her brain. To make matters worse, Bailey recently battled sepsis from a kidney infection. She was hospitalized for 2 months and had an IV port in her arm for 3 months after that to have antibiotics at home. After almost dying from sepsis, Bailey found out that the sepsis led to her having severe damage to her pancreas. As a result of the trauma, she now faces cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, which has left it nonfunctional. She must rely on enzymes to digest food and has become fully diabetic due to the damage. She also has precancerous cysts on her pancreas that have to be monitored and tested every year for the rest of her life. adding even more to her already overwhelming challenges.
Two weeks ago, Bailey started dealing with a sinus infection that wouldn’t go away. Concerned, her ENT sent her to the ER, where doctors discovered the possibility of necrotic tissue in her nose. After spending a day in the Columbus ER, Bailey was rushed to Emory in Atlanta, where doctors performed emergency surgery to remove the dead and infected tissue. Since then, she has been in the hospital, undergoing strong antibiotics to prevent the infection from spreading further. The road to recovery is long, but she’s hopeful to return home soon if all continues to go well.
However, Bailey’s journey doesn’t end there. She faces additional surgeries, including follow-ups to remove packing from her nose, and they decided yesterday that they will surgically repair her septum so she can breathe through her nose again, and prevent her nose from collapsing. She's healing from this surgery for about 4 weeks and then they will schedule the next surgery. Her recovery is complicated by the impact the medications have had on her kidney function and liver. Her kidney function. Has drastically decreased over the last week.
The road ahead for Bailey is incredibly long and uncertain. She will likely never be able to return to work and is facing an overwhelming pile of medical bills. Please consider helping Bailey in any way you can—your generosity will make a huge difference in her ability to navigate this difficult time. Every bit of support counts, and together, we can help her through this unimaginable struggle.
