***UPDATE***
Hi everyone, Zac here with an update on the situation.
I am home safe, released on bail at the start of the week for film Orla's brave paint-throwing action at the Department of Foreign Affairs. The protest at Iveagh House was a reaction to the Irish government's criminal inaction on the climate and ecological crisis. Thank you for the overwhelming amount of supportive and concerned messages. Thank you also so much for all your generosity and kindness in donating toward my bail.
Orla bravely rejected her bail conditions to highlight her commitment to the truth. As a result she is still being held in the Dóchas Centre of Mountjoy prison. Please listen to her video (linked below) and please write to her at [email redacted]. Her next court date will be on Monday. I will try to send another update then.
I am lucky that my parents are working, and could take money from their savings to cover my bail. I will abide by my bail conditions so this money will be returned at the end of my trail. My first proper hearing date is 19th May.
Given that my bail has been covered and Orla rejected her bail, it only seems right to refund the money that you have contributed. If you still wish to donate money to the environmental cause, please donate to an organisation that defends the rights of indigenous land protectors. Every year 200 activists are murdered for their efforts to protect their right to their land and water. Alternately, donate to a radical activist group such as Extinction Rebellion Ireland, Burning Pink, Scientist Rebellion, Black Lives Matter, etc. Down the line Orla and I may face fines and potentially more prison time. We may set up another Go Fund Me to cover such fines, if it comes to that.
Finally, a note about the nature of the action:
I understand that many people won't understand the paint protest — perhaps thinking it's counterintuitive or senseless. It's not. We are in the middle of the greatest crisis ever faced by our species. Hundreds of millions, if not billions of human lives are on the line due to the climate and ecological emergency. Non-violent direct action is the most effective tactic for rapid societal change. We have learned this from Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mandela, the Suffragettes and countless others. I can share articles backing this up in the comments when I have more energy. And for those thinking it's counterintuive — ask yourself, do you really believe people will no longer believe in the climate crisis because of this?
Human life is more important than property. Why is damage to property "criminal", yet destruction of the earth systems needed to sustain our life considered "progress"? Even if you do care about property more than life, you should still be fighting for climate action, as the climate crisis means destruction of property due to extreme weather events, sea level rise and war. Oh, and Iveagh House is fine by the way... all the paint has been cleaned up.
Activists do not undertake actions like this lightly. This comes as a last resort when all conventional methods have failed — which they have, miserably. The environmental movement has written letters, lobbied politicians, signed petitions and gone on marches for more than 40 years. It is naïve to think that by simply telling politicians the science that they will suddenly start to care. We need non-violent resistance. We need to replace the political class with citizen-led decision making, such as through legally binding citizens' assemblies. Orla and I will both stand by the consequences of this protest, whatever the repercussions.
Get involved.
Love and rage,
Zac

THIS IS NOT A FAKE GO FUNDME.
19 year old Orla Murphy took action at the Department of Foreign Affairs on the 19th of March to shine a light on the grotesque disparity between what the Irish government is saying about the climate crisis, and what they are doing. To highlight this, she spray painted “no more empty promises” on the front of the building. Without systemic transformation, billions of lives are at stake, and the most effective means of rapidly transforming society in modern history is through such examples of non-violent civil disobedience. Orla acted in that tradition. She faces disproportionate punishment for her actions, while the perpetrators remain free, continuing to destroy the prospects of continued life on Earth. Similarly, Zac Lumley (21) sits in prison for the supposed crime of filming the action. This is not just a miscarriage of justice, it is the carriage of injustice.
In Orla’s own words: “I know now that the powerful are sending us to our deaths. The most marginalised first. This process has already begun. They knew this. They knew the science. They knew they had to act and yet they refused time after time. They refused to stop killing the most marginalised among us. They care more about lining their pockets than they do about our lives. This is not a system that can act on the climate crisis. This is not a way of being that can get us out of the mess we’re in. We can not avert extinction in our current state. We are divided, we are uninformed and we are being constantly lied to and manipulated. I refuse to stand by and let this happen. I will raise the alarm no matter what the cost because I owe this. Those of us with privilege owe this.“
“As one of my last acts as a teen I am standing up for all the scared, traumatized & anxious teens across the world who have been let down by the generations that have come before us. As a relatively privileged teen I am standing up to show what those of us with privilege must do.”
