My sister Patience is 25+ weeks pregnant. This is their beautiful baby girl. They are expecting her arrival in late January.
You would think that with a face so perfect that nothing could ever be wrong with her. However, they learned a couple weeks ago that she has hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which means that the left side of her heart is severely underdeveloped. Without surgery she won't survive more than a week after birth. She will need a series of 3 surgeries that will eventually rewire the right side of the heart to pump blood to the body and allow blood to passively flow directly to the lungs instead of being pumped there. It will be nothing like a whole heart, but it will greatly prolong her life if she survives the surgeries. Statistically, she has a 70% chance of surviving all 3 surgeries. The first surgery will take place at about a week after birth. Recovery is expected to take 6 weeks. Ronald McDonald House is allowing them to stay with them during the 6 weeks for the first surgery, and insurance is covering the surgeries. However, they will have to be 3 hours away from home in Kansas City for 6 weeks for the first surgery and then again for a few more weeks just 6 months later for the second surgery. They are needing funds to cover loss of work so they can continue to pay their bills while they go through these operations with their precious baby girl, and the many out-of-town prenatal visits with the specialist. They are also wanting to move to Kansas City to be closer to their baby's doctors so that in the case of an emergency, they won't be 3 hours away from the surgeons and facilities that she will need. If you can do anything to help, they would be exceedingly grateful.
