We are so thankful for the continued support and prayers you have provided to Sterling, Maci, and Marshall. Sterling is so strong but he still has a long road ahead. Below are updates from his most recent surgery, The Glenn.
5:30 pm Update on Sterling
He is out of the Cath Lab and they’ve got him settled back into his CICU room. Unfortunately, they didn’t find a reason for all the fluid on his right side. They did go ahead and balloon 3 of his arteries to help them open up and allow more blood to flow through.
Sterling is currently sedated and intubated and will continue to be for at least a couple of days. They are going to give him medicine to help him pee in hopes of getting the fluid out of his body. This is extremely important for him. He needs the fluid to go down so his body can adjust to the pressure of blood in his upper body which is caused by the Glenn.
Right now the pressure in his upper body is too much for him causing a chronic headache and causing the blood to start forming other vessels to get to his heart, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. If his body can’t adjust to the new pressures, they will have to go in and undo The Glenn and put in another BT Shunt
Please continue to pray for Sterling. Prayers that the fluid comes off within the next couple of days and his body can adjust to the new blood flow pressure ❤️
11/1 Update on Sterling
Yesterday afternoon we noticed that he was swollen more on his right side and that his color was purple just on that side. This was very concerning to his team so they did ultrasounds where some of the lines are placed and an echo to check the Glenn Circuit.
They discovered 2 blood clots in his right leg. One in his arterial line and a small one in his vein. They started him on a higher dose of blood thinners to help dissovle these clots.
They took another chest Xray this morning and it showed to be worse than yesterday. The team decided that it would be beneficial to place another chest tube on his right side to help drain the fluid buildup. Unfortunately, it didn’t drain as much as they were wanting and he still has a lot of fluid build up on just his right side.
Around 11:00 am they will take Sterling back to the Cath Lab, put him under, intubate him, and began to investigate what is going on. We are hoping that they only need to do a minor intervention in the Cath Lab, but if they need to open his chest back up, Dr. Adachi, his surgeon, has come in and will take care of that.
Please please please say a prayer for Sterling. Pray for his Cath Lab doctors and nurses. Pray that they can find the problem and can resolve it. Pray that the clots go away, that they don’t move, and no new ones form.

Dear friends, family, and kind-hearted supporters,
My name is Lauren Burk, Aunt to our newest sweet Burk addition, Sterling Wayne.
Although Marshall and Maci are prepared as they can be and would never ask for the help, I am reaching out with hopeful spirits as we ask for your support as they prepare to welcome their first baby boy, Sterling Wayne. While this is one of the most joyful times of their lives, they are facing an incredibly difficult journey ahead.
Baby Sterling has been diagnosed with congenital heart disease and will need life-saving surgery immediately after birth. This means an extended stay in the hospital, a long road to recovery, and unimaginable emotional and financial stress for his loving parents.
Marshall and Maci will be away from home for at least 3 weeks, possibly longer, while they stay by their baby’s side. They will also need to take significant time off work, adding financial strain on top of an already overwhelming situation.
We want to ease their burden so they can focus on what truly matters—being there for their little warrior. Your generous donations will help cover:
❤️ Medical expenses not covered by insurance
❤️ Travel and lodging costs while they are away from home
❤️ Loss of income due to time off work
❤️ Essential expenses during this challenging time
Every contribution, big or small, will make a difference and will help their little family tremendously. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser to help spread the word. Most importantly, we ask for your prayers, love, and positive thoughts for Maci, Marshall, and Baby Sterling.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and support. Let’s rally around this family and show them they are not alone in this fight.
With love and gratitude,
An Aunt on a Mission
