From the very beginning, doctors believed that baby Rowen only had one kidney, and that it was located in her pelvis. Despite multiple ultrasounds and MRI’s, they were never able to clearly see it, which made the entire pregnancy full of worry and unknowns. At 37 weeks, Kelsianne was induced due to low fluid, and she and Lane welcomed their sweet girl, Rowen Joy Johnson, into the world.

Rowen’s first 24 hours of life were filled with hope. She appeared healthy, was urinating normally, and was meeting all her newborn milestones. Before discharge, doctors preformed an ultrasound to finally confirm the location and size of her kidney. What they discovered was devastating. Rowen does indeed have only one kidney, and it is much smaller than it should be and underdeveloped. Bloodwork revealed that it is struggling to function properly, and she was urgently transferred to Nemours Children’s Hospital for specialized care.

Rowen is a fighter, but her journey will be long and uncertain. Her parents are carrying the heavy weight of caring for their fragile newborn while also trying to be present for their 4-year-old daughter, Harper, at home. Along with the emotional toll, the financial strain of medical bills, travel, time away from work, and every day expenses is overwhelming.
