Three-month-old Milo lives just up the road from us in Uluwatu, Bali, at a warehouse where her owner Nata (a lovely local Balinese man) lives and works.
She’s the most loving, sweet, and bum-wiggly little thing, and I’ve been visiting her, her mumma Molly, and brother Poleng a few times each week for the past few months. They're all such precious pups with truly special natures.
Last Saturday I arrived for a routine visit, calling “DARLINGGGGGG” from down the road like I always do. But baby Milo didn’t waddle-sprint out to greet me like she usually does. Eventually I found her curled up in a bush nearby, unable to stand. Her legs were all bleeding, eyes wide and watery, and she was shaking uncontrollably.
Nata came running out, distressed and helpless. He told me a motorbike had been speeding past an hour earlier and hit Milo. He feared her legs were broken but there was nothing he could do. He didn’t need to explain why - the surgery and treatments Milo would end up needing would equate to many months of his wages.
My sister Ebony and I rushed Milo to an emergency animal hospital. X-rays and tests revealed:
- Fractured pelvis and hip on the right side
- Two fractures in her back left leg
- = so many fractures across her rear that, without surgery, the bones would fuse badly, leaving her in immense lifelong pain and likely unable to walk properly again
Devastatingly, Milo’s acute injuries are not the only thing threatening her life. All three doggies are suffering severely from:
- Progressive SCABIES*
- Severe intestinal worm infestation (Milo is passing 15cm worms)
- Severe ticks, fleas, ear mites, and other parasites
- Anaemia from long-term parasite infestation and malnutrition
- Likely blood infections
*Untreated scabies alone can be a slow & horrific death sentence for Bali dogs, leading to self-mutilation (due to scratching & biting), extreme infection, and eventually organ failure. Dogs with scabies can also never fully rest due to the constant irritation of millions of mites beneath their skin.
❤️❤️❤️ Our mission is to help Milo get the urgent surgery she needs, while also treating Molly and Poleng so that all three dogs can heal, regain their strength, and live happy, healthy lives free from pain and suffering ❤️❤️❤️
Cost Breakdown (approximate)
- Emergency X-rays & hospitalisation: $250
- Surgery for Milo’s hip & leg fractures: $800
- Post-op medication, pain relief, and check-ups: $100
- Parasite, worm & scabies treatment for all three dogs for 3-6 months until stabilised: $600
- Other support: nutrition, aftercare, bedding, follow-up vaccinations: $200
