On January 11, 2021 I (Victoria) went in for a routine checkup and sonogram on baby Mia. It was during this routine checkup that doctors found fluid in Mia's abdomen and referred me to Driscoll's Maternal Fetal Medicine to get a second opinion and run further testing on what could be causing the abdominal fluid to build up in baby Mia's abdomen.
On January 12, 2021 I (Victoria) went in to Driscoll's MFM to get a thorough sonogram, blood work, and an amniocenteses done to find out the root cause of the fluid build up. Up until this point all doctors had given baby Mia a poor prognosis for viability and told myself and her father that she most likely will be born with multiple disabilities due to the severity of her case or be born stillborn due to the diagnosis they were expecting.
On January 18, 2021 I (Victoria) went back to Driscoll's MFM where I received a diagnosis of CMV or Cytomegalovirus which is a virus that is prominent in young children and the rest of the world's population but can be caught anywhere. An individual can catch CMV through droplets such as saliva, blood, urine, and feces and CMV can be transmitted to the baby in utero once it has been caught for the first time.
On January 25, 2021 I (Victoria) was informed at Driscoll's MFM that unfortunately the virus I had caught was a primary infection and had transmitted to baby Mia in utero. CMV once transmitted to the infant can cause multiple disabilities such as hearing loss, vision loss, microcephaly, spina bifida, a variety of other neurological issues, and/or still birth.
Baby Mia has a team of specialist working on her case, we will be monitored weekly, and I have been prescribed a very heavy dose of antivirals to try to suppress the virus from attacking her any further. Once the time has come I (Victoria) have been informed that Mia will most likely have to be delivered prematurely in Houston TX due to the severity of her case to give her the best possible chance at survival if she does make it.
Due to this unfortunate diagnosis I (Victoria) am being placed on short term disability (FMLA) however I have not accumulated enough hours to receive work without pay even with this diagnosis. Not being able to work and bring in the paycheck that my children, my fiancé and myself so heavily relied on is taking a huge toll on my family. I am hoping that by requesting donations we might be able to save up for whatever the future holds for us and baby Mia's impeding arrival.
All proceeds will go to housing costs, medical costs and whatever other costs that might arise along the way. Anything and everything helps even if it is prayers sent our way.
Thank you,
Edgar, Victoria, Liam, Leon, and Mia.
