Help baby Luqman Get Life-Saving Heart Surgery
Donation protected
Greetings, my name is Kevin and I am raising funds for 5 month old Luqman Hassan to have open heart surgery. A recent medical diagnosis revealed that he has a congenital heart condition. His parents have been told that Luqman should have corrective surgery as soon as possible to reduce the risk of life-threatening heart failure or stroke.
Luqman is the third son of Hassan and Rahilu Bakari. He was born on November 4, 2024, in Mombasa, Kenya. The newborn appeared healthy and was released from hospital a couple of days later. For several weeks after being released he had been running a fever and was taken to a local clinic for treatment on several occasions. On January 20, 2025, the fever spiked and the infant was having trouble breathing. His parents took him to the local hospital where he was diagnosed with bronchial pneumonia and congenital heart disease. He was admitted into the intensive care unit. As of March 21, 2025, Luqman is still in the hospital intensive care unit. He is too weak to suckle and is being fed through a tube. Doctors want to keep him there in stable condition until his parents can arrange to have him transferred to a hospital that can perform the open heart surgery needed. See attached medical records for more information.
The hospital has advised the child's parents that the cost for corrective surgery to be performed at a specialty medical facility in Nairobi, Kenya would cost around KSH 1,800,000 ($13,905). Travel along with hospital follow-up care costs for a 30-days stay in the capital city would be an additional expense.
Mr. Hassan was also given a referral for a doctor who arranges for medical treatment in India. He contacted the person and was told that there is a specialty pediatric unit at Kiren Hospital that could perform the cardiatric surgery. The cost of the surgery was estimated at 500,000 rupees ($5,750). Airfare, food, lodging and follow-up care would be additional expenses.
Mr. Hassan has a full-time job with the government as a driver. He and his family barely get by on his salary of KSH 35,000 ($275) per month. There is no way he can afford to pay for his son's medical treatment. He is currently trying to raise funds from family and friends to help pay for his son's ongoing treatment in Mombasa.
I live in Elk Grove, CA. I am the executive director of a small 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations that raises funds for small locally run community heath projects in rural communities in East Africa. Mr. Hassan and I have been friends for over 9 years. All donations will into my non-profit account and will be dispersed directly to Mr. Hassan for payment of past and future associated medical costs. I have provided my organization's name and EIN below. I will provide a letter acknowledging receipt of tax-deductible contributions to any donor requesting and providing a US postal or email address.
On behalf of the Hassan family, I would like to say thank you and God bless for your prayers and donations.
