Daniel, our brave little boy, has already faced more in his short life than most ever will. Diagnosed as a baby with an aggressive AT/RT brain tumour, Danny has shown incredible strength from the very beginning. In those early days, he underwent urgent brain surgery in the United States to relieve pressure and allow doctors to take biopsies, a terrifying time that marked the start of this journey.
Over the past six months, Danny has continued to fight with everything he has, supported by his devoted parents, Matthew and Haley, and his big siblings Charlie and Sadie. After the initial shock of diagnosis overseas, the family made the difficult journey back home to Australia, hoping to continue treatment surrounded by support and familiarity. Since then, Danny has undergone intensive treatment and countless consultations, with every decision made carefully and with hope.
Recently, after extensive discussions with specialist teams and surgical consultants, the path forward has changed. What was once considered a potentially life-saving surgery is now believed to carry risks that outweigh the benefits due to the tumour’s location deep within the brain. This has led to an incredibly difficult but necessary decision. Danny’s next and most crucial step is proton radiation therapy, a treatment not currently available in Australia.
In a turn of events no one could have anticipated, the family must now return to the United States to access this vital treatment. While the Australian Government is able to support the cost of Danny’s medical care and accommodation, there are still significant expenses the family must carry, including last-minute international flights for three family members, a rental car for the eight-week treatment period, and travel insurance. Booking these flights at such short notice, alongside the current global climate, has created an overwhelming financial burden.
Matthew has not been able to return to work throughout this entire period, as the countless nights in hospital and frequent trips to the emergency department have been far more than anyone could have anticipated. Despite everything, their focus remains unwavering in giving Danny the very best chance at life. At the end of this phase of treatment, the family will once again return home to Australia and begin rebuilding, creating stability for their children while continuing to monitor Danny closely to assess how effective the radiation has been in keeping his tumour stable and hopefully avoiding any relapse in the future, and ultimately giving him the chance to live a normal life, one that is not defined by hospital rooms, procedures, nasal tubes, tests, blood draws, scans, general anaesthetics and constant dressing changes, but instead by playing with his siblings, being outside, going to the beach, and simply being a little boy.
