I’m asking for your help on behalf of my friends Timm and Rhea.
I’ve been friends with Timm since we met in middle school in a small town in East Texas. A decade ago, Timm moved to the Philippines to teach, where he met Rhea.
On July 4, 2020, Timm and Rhea’s second child, Caleb Doolen, was born with an infection in one lung that quickly spread to the other, most likely pneumonia.
Caleb has been in ICU for more than two weeks. Doctors predict it will be another week or two before he can be released. After 5 days of isolation due to Covid protocols, Rhea was finally able to start visiting her baby and now sees him a few hours each day. Neither Timm nor Caleb’s big brother Clive has been allowed to see Caleb yet.
Timm and Rhea live in the Philippines, so the insurance system is complicated. The costs for the hospital stay are expected to be around $8,000, and the long-term expenses Caleb may face are still unknown.
My friends lead a modest life. They live in a 500-square-foot apartment and don’t own a car. Timm sacrificed some personal comforts because he loves teaching in a developing country. Under normal circumstances, given Timm and Rhea’s frugal lifestyle, they could have handled that expense--but the last three years have been especially challenging:
--In 2018, Timm was diagnosed with Stage 3C colon cancer. Though he has recovered, his insurance covered only two and a half percent of his treatment costs.
--In 2019, a large number of Timm’s personal items in storage in the U.S. were stolen. Most were never recovered.
--In 2020, the Covid Pandemic permanently shut down Timm’s school; Rhea’s work in the food service industry was likewise affected. With no unemployment benefits, they have only their savings to meet the mounting costs of their son’s hospitalization.
