Hi, my name is Ayoola, I am a 22 year old final year nursing student.
I first began university in 2018, however, after a rejection from Student Finance England (SFE), and a delay with my passport getting to me, I had to drop out and wait another year to try again. During the year, while waiting, I worked serval odd jobs to try and save some money and keep myself useful.
In 2019, the following year, I was then granted admission and despite student finance taking a long time to process my application, the university allowed me to begin my course. It was difficult in the beginning as not only did I have to pay for tuition, but I also had to pay for accommodation in addition to living costs whilst trying to balance life in university and my course. At this point there was a lot of back and forth with SFE and myself to the extent that we had to involve lawyers. I am classed as a home student and couldn’t understand why this was going on.
By the end of my first year, the issue had still not been resolved, however I had to begin making payments in order to proceed with my course. My mum and I began making payments in my second year and since then we have succeeded in paying my first year tuition fees; a total of £11,550. Despite me working part time during COVID, and my mum’s financial contributions, we have still yet to pay £24,730.
I have worked hard to get to final year, I have enjoyed doing my placements and I am proud of myself for getting this far in nursing. In November 2021, I was removed from my accommodation for failure to make payments and a few weeks ago, I received a notification from my university stating I that I would be unable to graduate or qualify as a nurse unless I pay the remaining balance of £16,200 by August, 2022, notwithstanding the balance of £8,530 owed for my accommodation costs over the past two years.
Anyone that knows me, knows that I am a joyful person and I always love putting a smile on everyones faces and helping out whenever I can. Studying nursing has really helped me to this more and I am sure that this is the profession I want to develop my career in. It has been hard trying to remain positive with all this going on and even harder trying not to battle with anxiety.
Any contributions you can make towards helping me reach this goal will be very kindly appreciated. I am so grateful to be able to share my nursing journey and I hope doesn’t end here.
God bless you
