Tristina Wright is an author and member of the YA community. She continuously fights for diverse books and good representation and then she puts it in her own works, like her upcoming novel 27 Hours
Tristina also has a degenerative disc disease plus generalized anxiety disorder and a physiological tremor in both hands. This makes writing difficult, but she keeps going. She has multiple medications and will possibly someday require surgery to help with this. Her insurance covers very little of this and the expenses keep adding up. Writing isn't the most lucrative of careers and can be very hit or miss.
In September, Tristina applied for an Emergency Medical Fund from the SFWA. She heard nothing until December 1, when they emailed her congratulating her on being offered a grant of $4,000. She replied with gratitude, then heard back that the email had been sent by mistake - she wasn't getting the money.
A prominent member of the SFWA tried to speak up on Tristina's behalf and was told she was being disloyal and got nowhere. SFWA issued a public statement
making it clear they had no intention to issue this fund to Tristina but she was welcome to try again; understandably, Tristina has no wish to.
While Tristina does have a patreon
, it still doesn't fully cover the medical expenses her family deals with. Since many people cannot give every month, and since Tristina had truly believed she was getting a $4,000 grant, we still want to make that happen. All funds will be going to Tristina for her to use to cover medical expenses, as well as any other needs she may have. We're asking for an extra $500 to cover GoFundMe's fees as best as we can. Any money beyond the $4,000 and the GFM fees will also go to Tristina for her to use as needed.
