Hi, my name is Amy. I've gone back and forth about this, but I'm raising funds for my son, Austin.
Austin is 25 years old, and just before Christmas, our lives changed in an instant. While heading to his baby sister’s Christmas program, Austin slipped on ice and suffered a catastrophic fall. He broke both wrists and his shoulder, requiring three surgical repairs during a single surgery that lasted over six hours.
Although the surgeries were successful, his recovery will be long and uncertain. His right wrist is expected to heal well, but his left wrist has significant damage. He currently has very limited movement in several fingers and almost no use of his thumb. Two plates were placed in that wrist, one of which will need to be removed in 10–12 weeks, and we won’t know the full extent of permanent damage for at least six weeks.
Complicating things further, while surgeons were placing the final screws in his shoulder/humerus, a new fracture occurred. Because of this, Austin must remain 100% non-weight bearing on that side to allow healing and prevent the fracture from worsening.
Austin will be coming home with home health care, including physical and occupational therapy, as well as help with personal care.
Austin has autism and anxiety and has always been our “Gentle Giant.” At 6’5”, he may look big and strong, but he is incredibly gentle and sensitive. Being away from home is extremely difficult for him, and this hospital stay has been very hard emotionally. He has never been able to work due to his challenges, which makes this situation even more overwhelming.
We’ve also just learned that Austin will be losing his primary insurance coverage on January 1st, months before he turns 26, right in the middle of home health services, ongoing therapy, and an additional surgery. At the same time, our high deductible will reset. We are actively working with Blanchard Valley Center and other resources to see what assistance he may qualify for, but these processes take time.
Funds raised will help cover:
Medical bills and deductibles
Home health care, PT, and OT
Upcoming surgery and follow-up care
Daily care needs during recovery
Thank you for helping support Austin during this incredibly difficult time. If you’re unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser and keeping Austin in your prayers. Every bit of support truly helps.
With gratitude,
Amy
