Auntie Fatou, the mother of my dear friend Maimuna Bah, tragically lost most of her belongings and savings in a fire at her home in Brikama, Gambia that happened a few days ago. There were some non-life threatening injuries, but thankfully the dozen or more people who lived at the home are OK. This house was a home for not just Fatou's kids, but also some extended family members and some neighborhood kids she had taken in. However, while we are grateful that no one was severely hurt, the house is unlivable and Fatou is devastated that her home is seriously damaged and her savings are gone.
A bit of background on the amazing Fatou: Fatou has raised eight children and cared for her husband until his passing several years ago. Fatou moved to Seattle a couple years ago help her eldest child, Maimuna, care for Maimuna's sons. In addition to being an excellent mother, grandmother and caregiver, Fatou is an entrepreneur and businesswoman. In Gambia she had various small businesses. In Seattle, she worked at a restaurant to earn money to support her children and grandchildren back home, as well as to save to start a small business when she returned. Due to COVID-19, her hours at the restaurant have been greatly reduced, further hampering her ability to rebuild as she continues to support her family.
Fatou has given to so many people, and we hope to support her now in her time of need.
We know these are difficult times for many people. For those who have been asking how you can help, anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated. Fatou would also greatly appreciate a kind note, thoughts or prayers.
