My Aunt Jean is a vibrant and active woman who loves jogging in Central Park. On 07/07 on an afternoon run, her life changed in an instant when a man riding an e-bike collided with her. The impact left her with a traumatic brain injury that required emergency cranial surgery, broken elbow that required surgery, and deep lacerations that required skin grafts. She has had three blood transfusions and is now unresponsive in a medically induced coma, and our family is doing everything we can to support her recovery.
Aunt Jean does not have a primary support system in New York, so my mom has traveled from Georgia to remain by her side. While Aunt Jean fights for her life, we are also facing the urgent challenge of keeping her apartment. The funds raised will help cover her rent for the next two months, as well as some of my mom’s travel expenses between Georgia and New York. Keeping the apartment will give my mom a safe place to stay while caring for her and ensure that Aunt Jean does not wake up to the devastating news that she has lost her home. We want to spare her from another burden during this already difficult time.
We also hope to raise awareness about the dangers of e-bikes. E-bikes can reach speeds of 20+ mph, require no registration or insurance, and are nearly silent on approach. They cause serious injuries daily and there is a general lack of accountability.
Any support, whether through a donation or by sharing Aunt Jean’s story, means the world to our family. Thank you for caring about her recovery and the safety of others in the community.
