Help Aunt Dee & Vonny get LegalHelp

Many of you have heard my story (see link below), and I’m here to tell you that I’m still fighting, but the nightmare continues. After 58 years on this earth I have never been on the wrong side of the law. In my previous activism work, I worked with the police and community to organize events that celebrate diversity like Pittsburgh Black Pride. Yet I am facing the most unreasonable charges while the Penn Hills police show favor and trust in my neighbor who threatens and harasses me, and who killed my cat.

Moving to this home was a dream for Vonny and me. When we moved to Penn Hills in 2019 it was 6 months after I buried my mother and 2 and a half months after I had major back surgery. I moved to get peace of mind after my mother passed away in my home, which was emotionally painful for me. Vonny and I also wanted a split level home to better serve us at our age, while the home we were in was 4 stories. This felt like a new chapter, and we loved our new house.

I understand that when you move into a house you never know what is next door, but normally you have the assurance that your properties are separate. While the shared easement complicates this more, what is worse is that our neighbor is constantly disrespecting our property lines and privacy. He tries to exert power over us in every way he can. His behavior leaves no room for question: he is a racist and a homophobe. Never would I mislabel anybody. I pride myself in educating the community about diversity, acceptance, and understanding. I realize not all people will get it, yet I still try to work with them. However, this situation has gone way beyond what is reasonable for anyone to have to deal with.

My state of mind has changed. I find myself always looking out the window in fear of something else happening. The stress of the situation is taking away from my life mentally and physically.  Whenever I go outside I want to have someone with me, because he shouts nasty, offensive things when he catches me by myself. I have been called n****r, hoe, bitch, gay black ass, and more. Before I got security cameras, he was always nearby. If I was at the back of my property, so was he, if I was out front, there he was. I would shut the curtains early evening, because he was caught several times looking in and listening in on our conversations, which was truly terrifying. This situation is so crazy it takes my breath away.

I have gone to great lengths to communicate with the Penn Hills Police and Penn Hills City Council to beg for their assistance. For example, I reached out to code enforcement in Penn Hills in April 2020 who did not call me back right away, so I reached out to the Chief of Police (Howard Burton) by phone. He never got back to me, so I then sent a certified letter, then I sent an email, and then I hand delivered the same letter to the Penn Hills police department. The Chief never answered my letter. Council members have dismissed my concerns by simply saying that these matters are not for the council to get involved with, when we know in fact that overseeing performance of public employees, responding to constituent complaints, and providing guidance and leadership are the very fundamental responsibilities of council persons.

When you reach out to higher authorities for help and they don’t respond or acknowledge that there is a problem, you either give up or reach higher. I reached higher. Now Vonny and I need your help to secure a really promising lawyer which will require a $5,000 retaining fee. We want to move on from this ugly chapter of our lives, and we feel confident that this will lead us in that direction. Please give whatever you can. We cannot do this without you!
