Hello everyone! We are a US ARMY Veteran family of seven living in Desert Hot Springs, California. We have five children ages 2, 5, 11, 14, and 17, and unfortunately we are in serious need of assistance.
Our daughter has been fighting cancer for a little more than a year now. Aubrey Jane is a sweet five year old little girl, who was just like every other little girl her age, until around March 2022. She began experiencing severe pain in her hip, developed a rash that covered her entire body, and had a fever that would last for more than a week at a time. The pain was so unbearable that she couldn’t sleep, hardly ate, and would refuse to participate in T-ball or play with any of her siblings like she normally would. I took her to urgent cares, her doctor on multiple occasions, and to the emergency room.
After months of trying to find a reason for my daughters pain, we were finally sent via ambulance to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital, where on June 10th we were given the crushing diagnosis of high risk Pre B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Our sweet little girl, who had just started her life out, was now in a battle to fight cancer at just four years old.
Aubrey immediately had a port placed, and began aggressive chemotherapy treatments within a day of being diagnosed. Our lives were flipped upside down. We now had to find a way to afford transportation to and from Loma Linda for Aubrey’s treatment multiple times a week, which is an hour drive one way when there is no traffic. Having 4 other children at home, this quickly became very hard to manage for our family. 3 of our 4 other children are in 3 different schools, and we also have a baby at home as well.
We are a single income family, that relied completely on Aubrey’s fathers income. Unfortunately, the company he worked for shut down in the fall of 2022, and we have since fallen drastically behind on many bills. Our rent has been raised over $300 over the course of the last 18 months, which did not help the situation either. We are currently behind on car payments, rent, utilities, and other payments. We have had major repairs needed on both family vehicles that have made us fall even further behind on all mentioned finances as well. Finding work that is willing to work with the schedule we have to follow for our daughters cancer treatment has been very difficult so far, as she has many visits to her pediatric oncology clinic for chemotherapy, as well as many planner and unplanned hospital stays. During these times we have paid for all expenses out of pocket. This has caused us to max out all credit cards we had available, and we are now so far behind we are about to lose our home and vehicles.
As if having a child with cancer is not hard enough both emotionally and financially, I myself have been dealing with chronic kidney disease for the past 17 years, which is now finally in the end stages. I have to start the process of trying to get a kidney transplant, which requires many more trips to Loma Linda for my own health issues on top of Aubrey’s cancer treatment. All of this adds to the financial and mental load the family is already trying to juggle.
We had a friend try to help raise money through a fundraiser to help us get caught up, but we are still struggling to get current on all major bills. We got close to catching up on rent, then our rental agency asked us to give almost double the amount of rent every month, or we would be kicked out. Obviously without income due to loss of work, we could not afford double the rent considering we were struggling with the normal amount, so we have fallen behind even further again. Over the last month we have lost access to phones, internet, are being told we are being evicted, and are on the verge of losing both vehicles.

I have been searching for ways to get assistance, and we have been trying to work out arrangements with everything, but being so far behind, are not getting very far.
As much as I hate telling the world how hard of a time we are having, it has come to the point where I’m not sure what else to do. We have tried to stay afloat in every way we know how, and have kept most of our struggles private for the past year, so as to keep our children’s lives as normal as possible, but we are about to lose everything, have no home, or way to get to and from necessary medial appointments.
We’re working towards trying to become current on all necessary bills, such as rent, car payments, utilities, credit cards, phones, and internet, and hopefully get a little ahead so that we can focus on keeping our girl healthy while she keeps fighting Leukemia.
If you are able to help, even if it is share our story with others, or point us in the direction of any help you know of, we would be forever grateful. Again, it is very hard for me to tell the word about the situation we are in, but I’m afraid for my children to have no where to live more than anything.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, we appreciate every share!
