Over the past month, my sweet boy Atticus has been slowly, bravely recovering from hepatic lipidosis, fatty liver disease, which showed up after he suddenly stopped eating last month and everything in his little body just went downhill so fast. When Atticus stopped eating, his body started breaking down fat too quickly, his liver got overwhelmed, and it crashed in a really scary way. Atticus became weak, nauseated, dehydrated, just not himself at all, and he needed urgent vet care, an emergency surgery, assisted feeding, fluids, the whole thing, just to stabilize him.

But today, he’s doing so much better. He’s eating again, holding his weight, and these tiny pieces of his personality keep coming back. He’s more alert, more cuddly, more curious, more “Atticus,” and it honestly makes me tear up with relief. His hydration is improving, his digestion is calmer, and the careful feeding plan we’ve been following is helping his liver heal, slowly but surely. He’s not fully recovered yet, but he’s past the most dangerous stage, and I’m grateful for every small, wobbly, hopeful step forward.

He still needs consistent high calorie meals to finish reversing the fat buildup in his liver, plus ongoing vet check-ins and follow-up bloodwork to make sure his liver values keep trending in the right direction. I’m watching his appetite, energy, and hydration every day, and he may need supportive meds as he works his way back to regular eating. His recovery will take time, but his prognosis is hopeful, and he truly is getting better, bit by bit, day by day.
