Meet Atom, a tiny Yorkshire Terrier puppy with an enormous fighting spirit.

Atom came to us through rescue after experiencing a significant decline in mobility. Shortly after he arrived, it became clear that something was seriously wrong. We sought answers from both a neurologist and an orthopedic specialist, and advanced imaging revealed a devastating diagnosis: AA (atlantoaxial) subluxation.

AA subluxation occurs when the first two vertebrae in the neck are unstable and can shift out of place. This instability can place pressure on the spinal cord, causing weakness, loss of mobility, pain, and in severe cases, sudden death if the neck is not stabilized.

Since his diagnosis, Atom has spent months in a specialized cast designed to keep his neck stable while he grows. We hoped conservative treatment would allow him to heal without surgery. Despite his determination and progress, it has become clear that medical management alone is not enough.

Surgery is now Atom’s only option.

The challenge is that Atom weighs just 1.5 pounds. His tiny size makes an already complex surgery even more difficult and risky. After extensive searching, we found a highly experienced surgeon in Florida who is willing to take on Atom’s case. Unfortunately, this means traveling out of state and remaining there throughout his recovery period.

The estimated costs include:

* Surgery: $6,000–$8,000 from initial estimate from the clinic

* Travel and lodging during his required two-week recovery: $3,000–$4,000

* Follow-up care and related medical expenses

In total, we expect costs to exceed $10,000.

Anyone who has followed Atom’s journey knows he is a fighter. He has endured months in a cast, countless veterinary visits, and challenges that no puppy should have to face. Through it all, he continues to show us his resilience, determination, and joy.

We know there are no guarantees with a surgery this complex, but without it, Atom’s future is extremely limited. This operation offers him the best chance to walk, play, and live the life every puppy deserves.
