Help Athena Fox Get the MRI & Care She Desperately Needs!

Donation protected
My beloved, Miss Athena Fox just turned 3 years young on 4/25/25!

She has been experiencing some health issues since she was adopted from a Siberian rescue org. in December 2022.

These issues are rather complex and mysterious that require an MRI of her brain and body to be able to adequately diagnose. The initial hypothesis of Dr. Rob Daniel at Angell Neurology, is that she may have a malformation in her cerebellum (fairly common and she can lead a long life with management)

After observing the tons of footage, it's also deemed that she could have a potential orthopedic issue and/or neurological issues and is a mystery to even the very best veterinary physicians at MSPCA-Angell.

She has displayed some mild seizure like symptoms and activity starting a year or so ago, and has been on gabapentin ever since to help with both the 'mystery' issue that brings occasional discomfort/pain that requires an MRI for diagnosis - and to help with the seizure like activity which has become very few and far between (but never good), neither can be fully confirmed until proper diagnosis' after imaging.

She started having digestive issues by suffering from constipation lately which she got treated for last Sunday - the ER I took her to (NOT Angell) had given her a medication that is not to be administered to seizure prone animals, nor would help with constipation, it turns out.

As a result, she has suffered a cluster of seizures (multiple seizures in a row) which is emergent. She had to be admitted to Angell to ensure she survived the night. She has been there since in observation and under seizure meds, they put her on a phenobarbital load (seizure meds) etc. She has been seizure free so far, but is also displaying abdominal pain which they are giving her an ultrasound for, while treating the constipation, etc.

Yes, this is a lot - she is a puzzle that needs solving, but without insurance covering her MRI nor the exams relating to the 'mystery' issue and the neurological - seizures, we are merely addressing symptoms and issues if/when they arise while not effectively treating her, while causing a deeper struggle to support financially as a result.

The Cold Hard Facts:

Below are the bills that we need support with immediately, in order of priority:

Angell-MSPCA Boston - current total: $4,086.40
  • I maxed out CareCredit with $1,900 of this total.
  • The remainder of the ER visit: $2,186.40

MRI Estimate (full spine and brain): $7,979.54
  • Her care team at Angell urges us to get this done ASAP.

Follow up Drs Visits & Labs: $1,620
  • Including 2 specialist appointments (Internal & Neurology follow ups needed) $450 each = $900 minimum.
  • Labs (blood work, etc.): $720+

Total estimate: $13,685.94

$15,000 as the ultimate goal to help cover follow on treatments/exams/meds/labs (i.e., Blood Work every 3 months, daily meds, etc.) GoFundMe has graduated goals, our goal will continue to rise as we hit each milestone.

It's astonishing how much can add up in a short amount of time. I have tried with Insurance to no avail and continue to try - I just got a secondary carrier that won't cover pre-existing for another 366 days. (now paying over $100 a month for insurance). I have maxed CareCredit and ALL of my Credit Cards - now this is impeding our livelihood (Rent/Food/Overhead) and we need support from the larger community.

Athena is such a special and unique being that is hard to describe but melts everyone she meets. She has loads of personality, is full of vigor, incredibly smart, playful and the sweetest and most aggressive cuddler ever, and I live for it.

She is my whole heart, my baby, my familiar. I may have rescued her, but she is the one that truly rescued me. We found each other at a time when we needed each other the most. She first came to me in a dream, then via rescue all the way from Alabama.

Thank you for taking the time to read and support us, weather monetarily, because truly every little bit will help, or just by offering moral support, love and sharing our story. I have faith that with the help of community, Athena will live a long and healthy life.

With all our love and eternal gratitude,
Eugenia & Athena
xoxo
