Athena has spent the past 38 years as a registered nurse, dedicating her life to providing care and resources to those in need—particularly the homeless, indigent, and mentally ill. Her husband, Craig, served as a Los Angeles County sheriff for 31 years, working in patrol, specialized units addressing mental health emergencies and homelessness, and as a minister for 25 years. Together, they have lived lives centered on service to others.

Now they find themselves in a situation they never imagined. The Palisades fire has devastated their home, leaving it condemned and uninhabitable for the foreseeable future. On the morning of the fire, they left for work with just the clothes on their backs, unaware they wouldn’t return to their home that evening. Without power or water, and with extensive damage to their condo, their home may remain unlivable for months, possibly years.

This has been an incredibly difficult time for them, not just because of their sudden displacement but also because they are unaccustomed to asking for help. Both have spent their lives as “helpers,” always the ones giving support to others. It’s hard for them to be on the other side of the equation, but they have come to realize that even helpers need help sometimes.

Now, we have an opportunity to give back to this remarkable couple who have given so much to their community. Any contribution—big or small—will go directly toward helping Athena and Craig get back on their feet, including securing temporary housing, acquiring basic necessities, relocation and rebuilding costs - all needed as they begin to rebuild their lives.
