Please Help Astar the Kitten!

Hello, everyone - Meet Astar!

Astar is a four-month-old Tuxedo kitten that Reggie and I recently adopted from a local animal shelter. We first met Astar around Christmas Eve when A-Star, the rare Christmas Star, lit up our night sky. The name “Astar” was a good fit, as he would shortly be the new light in our lives!

When we met Astar, he was suffering from a severe leg injury and we could not adopt him right away. (*Graphic Warning*) He was missing most of the skin on his inner-left leg, had exposed bone, and suffered from an underlying infection. The leg injury was so severe, the shelter considered amputation. But, at the time, they decided the best option was to treat the wound.

Because Astar was not yet able to be adopted, we helped him through a foster-to-adopt program. We administered all of his medication throughout the holidays and gave him our undivided love. When we returned to the animal shelter for a follow-up medical visit, Astar was cleared for adoption!!! At this time, the shelter believed his wound was healing well and there would not be further complications.

Due to the severity of the wound, we took Astar to the vet for a second opinion. While the open wound was indeed healing well, the vet took x-rays to assess the internal damage. The vet identified that Astar’s ankle is completely broken. The bones are infected and spread very far apart – this means that splinting nor orthopedic surgery are good treatment options. The best option is to amputate Astar’s leg. Unfortunately, pet insurance, the animal shelter, or other financial programs we have explored will not cover the cost of Astar’s amputation. The longer we wait to save up the money for amputation, the more we risk that his bone infection will spread. So, we are trying to quickly raise $1600 to cover the cost of Astar’s amputation. If we cannot afford this procedure, we will have to surrender Astar back to the animal shelter so they can give him adequate care.

We love Astar. He has not been in our home for very long; but, he has touched our lives. I cannot imagine the amount of pain he is in. But, despite this, he is the most fun-loving kitten. He loves playing with his toys and his new big brother, our cat Louie. We would be so grateful for any help you are able to provide, including words of support. Thank you all for your love and consideration.  Astar thanks you! <3
