Feed Hope: Emergency Food Assistance & Groceries for Families

Across New York City, families continue to be pushed to the edge by SNAP instability. Despite reinstating benefits, frequent policy changes, shifting eligibility rules, and delayed benefits have disrupted support that millions of Americans depend on for survival. Many families now face the risk of losing access to the resources they rely on to feed their children.

At Asiyah Women’s Center, this crisis is deeply personal. 100% of the families we serve depend on some form of food assistance. 95% rely specifically on SNAP benefits to feed their children. When benefits are cut or delayed, the impact is immediate as mothers and children go hungry.

One of our residents, a survivor named Amina (name changed for privacy), arrived at Asiyah after escaping years of abuse. Her husband controlled every aspect of her life, including her meals. Some days she was not allowed to eat at all. When she first came to our center, she had not eaten a full meal in days. The first thing she said when handed a plate of rice and vegetables was, “I can’t believe I’m allowed to eat whenever I want.”

Amina’s story is not unique. For many survivors, food represents more than survival. It represents freedom, safety, and the chance to rebuild their lives.

Recent federal guidance has required states to adjust eligibility criteria and implement new administrative rules. These changes have created confusion and additional barriers for many families, including refugees, single mothers, and survivors of domestic violence. They are often among the hardest hit when policies shift.

While politicians debate solutions, the families in our communities cannot wait. At Asiyah Women’s Center, we are determined to provide as many families as possible with groceries, dignity, and relief.

Through the Asiyah Groceries Program, we provide culturally familiar halal groceries, fresh produce, and essential pantry items to families who have nowhere else to turn. We ask for your support to continue providing consistent food assistance to our community.

About Asiyah Womens Center Inc

The Center currently operates programs in Brooklyn, NY as the first center to provide temporarily housing and other support services to domestic violence survivors and victims of homelessness with a focus on Muslim womens emergency shelter in New York City. The Center furthers its charitable purposes primarily by conducting activities designed to further those purposes, including, but not limited to: providing temporary housing for victims of domestic violence and women facing eviction and/or homelessness and connecting women in need to job opportunities, a range of mental health and medical services, permanent housing facilities, health insurance and legal assistance.
