Feed Hope: Emergency Groceries for Families Facing SNAP Cuts

Across New York City, families are being pushed to the edge by devastating cuts to the SNAP program. These cuts, tied to recent actions by the Trump administration and ongoing federal budget battles, have disrupted or delayed food benefits that millions of Americans depend on for survival.

At Asiyah Women’s Center, this crisis is deeply personal. One hundred percent of the families we serve depend on food assistance. Ninety-five percent rely specifically on SNAP benefits to feed their children. When these benefits are cut or delayed, the impact is immediate as mothers and children go hungry.

One of our residents, a survivor named Amina (name changed for privacy), arrived at Asiyah after escaping years of abuse. Her husband had controlled every aspect of her life, including her meals. Some days she was not allowed to eat at all. When she first came to our center, she had not eaten a full meal in days. The first thing she said when handed a plate of rice and vegetables was, “I can’t believe I’m allowed to eat whenever I want.”

Amina’s story is not unique. For many survivors, food represents more than survival. It represents freedom, safety, and the chance to rebuild their lives.

Now, with the federal government’s ongoing SNAP disruptions, many survivors are once again at risk of going hungry. Reports from The Washington Post and Politico show that millions of Americans could lose access to food benefits because of political gridlock and administrative delays. Families led by single mothers and survivors of domestic violence are among those hit hardest.

While politicians play a game of chess with the lives of our communities, we at Asiyah Women’s Center are determined to make sure we can provide as many families as possible with groceries, dignity, and relief.

Through the Asiyah Groceries Program, we provide culturally familiar halal groceries, fresh produce, and essential pantry items to families who have nowhere else to turn.

The Center currently operates programs in Brooklyn, NY as the first center to provide temporarily housing and other support services to domestic violence survivors and victims of homelessness with a focus on Muslim womens emergency shelter in New York City. The Center furthers its charitable purposes primarily by conducting activities designed to further those purposes, including, but not limited to: providing temporary housing for victims of domestic violence and women facing eviction and/or homelessness and connecting women in need to job opportunities, a range of mental health and medical services, permanent housing facilities, health insurance and legal assistance.
