My name is Ayan -- I'm a college sophomore, and for my entire life I've been inspired by my father Ashoke Bhattacharjee. We're pictured above with my mother Smita Goswami in 2019.
My father immigrated to the U.S. from India in 1997. He was, and is, a humble person with a simple dream: to raise a family in the land of opportunity. By any metric, he succeeded, and was ready for the next phase of his life.
But just after Thanksgiving this year, my father Ashoke Bhattacharjee was diagnosed with Colorectal cancer. Soon after, we learned that it had spread, making it Stage 4. The path forward starts with aggressive chemotherapy (FOLFOXIRI) to shrink tumors, followed by multiple surgeries.
My dad is a brilliant scientist who made a career of developing the antibiotics of tomorrow. He's a noble person who has always prioritized giving back to his community for his entire life. Our family friends know him as always trying to make everyone laugh, and a phenomenal bridge player. He loves Bengali cinema, poetry, and music, and has made sure I understand my cultural roots.
But right now, my dad needs our help. My family and I are doing everything we can. But our insurance coverage is inadequate at best. Most of our funds normally reserved for everyday costs now have to go towards the treatment my dad needs.
We're asking for some support to make sure my dad can have everything he needs. From chemotherapy drugs which cost thousands of dollars a month, to everyday groceries and amenities. Anything you can contribute will be absolutely helpful. All we can offer in return is our thanks and gratitude and a promise: that when we are able, we will do everything we can to pay it forward.
