Help Ashley and Liam Avoid Eviction

(card from my sister that I will cherish forever)
Aloha my name is Ashley Green & this is my ohana and the story of our journey.
While I have remained strong throughout everything for myself & my son. I have reached a point where it’s become vital that I put aside my pride & rely on the aloha of my community.
As I recently received a letter to remit payment or face eviction. I currently owe $7065 (due by June 10th) to my landlord despite living in unsafe conditions for the majority of my lease. I contacted multiple organizations for rental assistance since February up until now to no avail. This go fund me is my last hope at securing my housing situation & mitigate the severe mold situation which has put our health & safety at risk the past 10 months.
Unfortunately, we have faced loss after loss over the last 4 years. In January 2022 when Liam was not quite a year & a half old his father passed away unexpectedly thrusting me into single parenthood. I went from being an essential worker to sahm during the Covid era to having to reenter the workforce. Which was a challenge as I had to also secure childcare.
While I was able to get back on my feet. I ended up exhausting my entire savings covering living expenses. January 2024 I was unexpectedly laid off & also informed that the owner of unit we had been residing decided to sell. So I only had 90 days to find a new place for us to live.
The very next month I had the misfortune of finding my sister Krystal deceased at home during a wellness check. I had to handle all of the affairs until our mother returned home. I started my new job the very next week. Completing training while cleaning out both my apartment & my sister’s. Two weeks later my mom informed me that our biological father had also passed away. I made the decision to move back to Mililani to be closer to my parents. We laid Krystal & our father James to rest June 2024. I took bereavement leave & returned back to work thinking it would be the end of this chapter. However, I had no idea of the troubles that lie ahead.
September 12th 2024 I had bilateral reconstructive eye muscle surgery & went on a medical leave of absence. What should have been a relatively easy procedure with a short recovery time turned into me being out of work until March 2025. Which is when I reached the max benefit date for my short term disability. (I did not foresee my surgery recovery taking this long & so I did not opt for long term benefits during the election period.) During a post op follow up appointment in February 2025, it was recommended that I have a second surgery which I underwent on April 24th 2025. However, I am unable to submit another claim as my benefit year does not end until September. So I have 0 forms of income at this time. I plan to apply for disability via social security but it could take up to a year to get approved thus why my donation goal is 30k which would help cover living expenses for the next year. I also now have to pay my insurance premium out of pocket because I no longer receive a paycheck or risk losing coverage which I so desperately need due to my disability. Not to mention mounting medical bills (close to $1k)
Despite all of these challenges I found the strength to return to college. My sister was elated when I told her I got accepted to UH Manoa & planned to finish my undergraduate in Public Health. I have been blessed to become the recipient of the Live your Dream scholarship, Osher-Crankstart, Manoa Opportunity grant, & Manoa Summer Merit Scholarship. Which has provided the financial relief needed so that I can focus on my studies. I am proud to say I have maintains all A’s since my return & currently have a 3.8 GPA. But now I am at risk of having to use funds intended for my education to help cover back rent which could put my academic future at risk.
My parents have also helped where they can like helping cover for Liam’s extracurricular activities. However they are no longer in a position to do so.
Donations will go towards helping getting me back in good standing with rent, cover living expenses as we go through the mold remediation process, medical bills, and educational expenses as we’re both in school.
Despite all of the circumstances Liam has handled it all so incredibly well & continues to light up our lives with his beautiful smile and infectious laugh. Which is more than a mom could ever ask for given the circumstances.
My goal is to graduate with my Masters in Public Health by 2030 so that I can give back to my community. My dream is to start a foundation for families who have lost one parent or both. Often times it feels like we’re the only ones going through this but, truth is there are so many families that look just like ours. I want to create a network of support for the children & their caregivers. Providing a place where we can come together to remind these babies & their caregivers that they aren’t alone. There are programs in some states that provide bereavement support for children but currently there is no one organization providing support for all 50 states. I plan to be the one to change that.
If you made it this far. Thank you for taking the time to read our story. I kindly ask that you consider donating to help support our ohana during this difficult time. Or if you’re unable to please share the link. Any donation helps. Your aloha is appreciated.
