We’re feeling our feelings over here!
Exhausted, sad, grateful and excited, to name a few!
On March 11, 2023 we closed our doors to move locations. Our hope is that this closure is temporary, but the truth is our organization has been struggling to stabilize post-pandemic.
The new location is less expensive and significantly larger than our last. It will increase our ability to receive and redistribute more materials and divert them from ending up in the landfill.
However, we are still a long way from reopening at this point.
We've been fielding an incredible amount of questions, namely about our new location and when folks can donate and/or shop again.
Currently, we are in the middle of physically moving our space, which is massive endeavour. However, during this time we are reassessing our entire operation. Because, the ArtsJunktion you know and love cannot keep running the way it has been...
How did we get here?
When the depot is open, we lose any profits we generate, so we run at a deficit.
Our ethos of Take-what-you-need, Pay-what-you-can is a double-edged sword. We truly believe in Art For All, and in our efforts to support our community as widely as possible, but we have discovered that we cannot keep up with the increasing demand for free materials. Pay-what-you-can only functions only when folks can pay.
It’s a challenging time for most nonprofits, and ours is really feeling the pain from historical lack of operational funding and the loss of pandemic relief. Not to mention the loss in revenue from the incredible community members who regularly donate materials at our depot.
What happens next?
For now, we are still running fabulous workshops and virtual programming. And we will start accepting materials donations as soon as we can! However, it will certainly be a moment until we open for shopping.
What can you do to help?
The next quarter of a year is critical in understanding how we move forward.
We’re looking for support during this period as we search for solutions to ensure the long-term stability of our nonprofit. We truly want to provide Art for All and to do so for a long time to come. The next few months will be illuminating and will make clear the crucial steps needed for us to continue being a much-needed resource in our community.
It’s hard to ask for support, but please consider donating here to help us at this critical moment. We are forever grateful for any financial support you can send our way!
If you are unable to donate, there are many other ways to help ArtsJunktion; sign up for a workshop, purchase from our online store , consider hiring us for workshops and programming (we're super fun!) and/or share this page as widely as possible within your networks.
Thank you!!!
