Help Artist Get To Senegal For Residency
Hello My Loves,
My name is Darryl DeAngelo Terrell, I'm a Detroit based artist and educator seeking your help. I was recently granted the opportunity to be apart of the second class of a life-changing artist residency in Dakar, Senegal, African" The BLACK ROCK SENEGAL RESIDENCY "
BLACK ROCK is an artist residency hosted by the internationally respected, celebrated, and known Kehinde Whiley (for my people who aren't into art, he made the Obama Portrait).
I am scheduled to attend the residency for the month of October 2021, The residency itself is able to provide everything BUT my airfare, which is a barrier for me because the airfare is close to $2,000, and I am not in the finical space to purchase the ticket solely on my own, which is why I'm asking for you help.
Being that I am 6'7, and 360pound I have to pay for comfort+ (i.e wider seats, more legroom etc.).
About the Work:
Project 2: "Dion"
since 2016, an ongoing performative photographic project where I explore gender performance, desire, and femmeness through my fat black non-binary body, an alter ego that I have named “ DION”. As both project and embodied being, throughout “DION” I strive to intersect the lines between, the urban aesthetic of my Detroit upbringing, and the opulence of femininity. When thinking about the home that the residency is hosted I think about how could really bring a higher level of decadence to the work that I am not able to achieve currently being Detroit, MI.
Project 1: "How To Get Gone"
I’ve recently begun on a body of work titled “How We Get Gone” where I am interested in how the natural landscape can provide portals for black bodies to escape to our complete liberation. This work is being explored via photographs of portals juxtaposed against the surrounding environment, an array of both found and original video, creative short forum essays, prose, and poems, and field recordings of environmental sounds. I find site-specificity to be an essential part of this work, thinking about how landscapes and physical structures hold some significance to the collective black experience.
