Help Aron get top surgery revision!
Donation protected
we are aron's friends and we are fundraising for his upcoming top surgery revision. aron is an incredibly sweet and kind human ~ he is thoughtful, supportive, hilarious, and infuses the room with a quiet joy and cynical lightness.
we previously fundraisered for arons top surgery and folks so kindly donated about $2.6k. unfortunately, this only put a dent in the 10k he had to pay out of pocket. he has gone through the process of attempting to get the Norwegian health care system to reimburse him for top surgery. after this exhausting process, he has been told that not a single penny will be reimbursed. after paying $10k out of pocket for the initial surgery, he has to pay thousands more for a revision, as the initial surgery did not take out enough tissue and he still experiences dysphoria. this is all occurring after we had to move out of our last housing unexpectedly and aron is attempting to navigate the difficult process of obtaining a visa in the US, after graduation from school.
we asked him previously to explain why the process has been so difficult. cw for transphobia and family rejection below:
"The Norwegian health care system is still lagging behind in trans health care, and most trans people don’t get gender affirming care covered at all. A small percentage are able to go thru the public health care system by an extensive and humiliating assessment process that last 1-2 years where you have to adhere to stereotypical gender roles to prove you are trans enough to get care. If you start treatment in private healthcare out of pocket you get punished by being refused covered treatment later on. Nonbinary people do not have any possibilities of getting surgery or hormones covered and have to cover all costs themselves.
I don’t have health insurance but as a Norwegian student abroad I have health coverage through the Norwegian government while I’m in school, which is supposed to cover the same things as would be covered in Norway. The assessments in Norway take place in one National center. I have been able to get access to private healthcare that is equivalent but not exactly the same as in Norway as it is a different system and that’s been ok. By being broad, I was hoping to have found a loophole in the legislation but after having waited 4 months for an answer on whether it was covered, I was been told (1) they probably will not cover it at all but the only way to find out is to have the surgery and then send the bills to them, (2) refused to explain what documents I would need to get it covered as that would be “cheating,” and (3) told me I should just wait until I came back to Norway. I’ve been trying to navigate the Norweigan healthcare system but it’s too hard and invalidating and humiliating and depressing. So that’s why I’m hurrying to do it while I’m here.
I’ve taken out 6k of extra student loans to cover it on top of my savings and I don’t have family to ask for help as both my parents believe that gay people are pedophiles that will burn in hell and that trans people are mentally ill (I am not exagerating)."
aron has taken on this stress because it is worth it for his surgery, but we're hoping he can get the revision to the gender affirming surgery he needs while not exhausting all of his resources and taking on more debt.
