Hi,
My name is Alex and I am raising funds for my dad, Robert (military vet) who has recently experienced a handful of life changing medical issues and is now currently out on unpaid FMLA until further notice.
For the last three months, my family and I have been quietly dealing with my fathers health and trying to do the best we can during these circumstances but more and more medical appointments and tests are being scheduled and we are in need of support.
MEDICAL TIMELINE:
Shortly before 61st birthday my dad got sick with what we now know is RSV and was incredibly sick.
While still trying to recover from RSV, he had what we call his first "medical event" because we still don't know what these two episodes were. We had to call 911 and once they arrived they put him on a CPAP machine and took him to Columbia Pres. here in Manhattan. He was discharged the same day without being told he was positive for RSV.
9 days later he had his second medical event. Same symptoms again, fatigued, falling in and out of conscieness, gasping for air, unable to speak at times, passing out, but this time he was unable to use his left hand. We called 911 again and back to Columbia Pres. He went. This time he was admitted because they thought he had a stroke. He spent days in the hospital and eventually they said he did NOT have a stroke even thought he had all the symptoms (Memory gaps, weakness on the left side and unable to control his tongue) but they didn't know what happened. After he was discharged we learned that he had an aneryusm in his heart which they never informed us about.
We've been to MANY doctors appointments, dad has had countless tests done, complete lifestyle change but still we have spent the last 3 months trying to figure out WHAT is happening to my dad.
The day after a heart test my dad discovered his broke a rib and on April 29th, he had a heart attack and once again had to be rushed to Columbia Pres to have an emergency procedure done to clear out a blockage in one of the stents in his left artery
As of right now, my dad is on FMLA and unable to return to work, he has to use walking aids like a cane, wheelchair and walker depending on the situation, and is dealing with newly diagnosed hypotenstion which makes every day activities almost impossible for him because of the symptoms.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT:
Transportation: We've had to take taxis for every appointment these last 3 months back and fourth because Dad cannot walk more than 2 blocks without experiencing fatique and other hypotenstion symptoms. (We are hoping he qualifies for access a ride but his first appointment is at the end of June and we have a handful of appointments before then)
Bills: Since dad is on unpaid FMLA any funds we can raise will also help with bills
Food: We've been making all my dad's meals for him since he is now on a strict meal plan for his diabetes, which we've been able to get under control but this diet requires trips to the supermarket for fresh fruit and veggies mutltiple times a week
Medical Equipment: We have a growing list of medical equiment and tools my dad needs like medical grade compression socks, electrolytes, wheelchair accessories and more.
I know this is going to be a long journey for my dad and my family but any and all support will help us while we figure out what my dad's future looks like and how to best give him the care he needs.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. My family and I are incredibly grateful for your time.
-Alex
