Help Ariana Battle her Stage IV Cancer
Donation protected
In March 2020, our student Ariana Salguero, a senior at Vassar College, was suddenly diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. As the rest of us worried about COVID-19, Ariana was forced to contend with much more. In late March, she underwent surgery to remove parts of her colon. Unfortunately, her doctors found her cancer had metastasized and immediately started her on chemotherapy treatment. As of mid-April, Ariana has completed one round of chemotherapy to keep the cancer from doing any further damage to her liver. However, due to further hospitalizations, she is still waiting to continue further treatment.
PLEASE consider donating to help Ariana get through this by helping her family pay for the medical costs being incurred rapidly each day. She is our classmate, friend, Vassar student, and also a remarkable young woman who has so much to offer. We worry in particular about expenses that may not be covered through health insurance arrangements.
ABOUT ARIANA:
Ariana Salguero is from a northern suburb of Chicago, where she lives with her parents, sister, aunt, uncle and cousins. A senior at Vassar College, Ariana completed a double major in Anthropology and Latin American Studies so she could pursue her passion for public service in Latinx communities and the study of Indigenous cultures. Her field work in January 2020, shortly before her unexpected cancer diagnosis, took her to remote Tikuna communities located on either side of the border between Colombia and Brazil, where she investigated Indigenous approaches to cultural resource management and cultural representation in museums.
As a college student, Ariana has gone well beyond academic work. As her professors, we can attest that she is one of those rare, bright stars: a young woman who is not only a terrific student, but also embraces every opportunity to create change around her. Ariana served as a mentor to children from Latinx backgrounds in the City of Poughkeepsie school district. In 2018, Ariana and a Vassar friend co-founded VUELA, an after-school program that supports middle-school students as they prepare for high school and college. Ariana’s selfless work has had a huge impact on the lives of these children, and also on students and faculty at Vassar College. This is why we, her professors, colleagues and friends, ask that you kindly give what you can at a time when Ariana and her family need our help.
