Hello, you may know me as April on my socials that I use for community building.
For years, I've found purpose in two things: advocating for marginalized communities online and then prior serving others as a Registered Nurse. Nursing wasn’t just a job for me; it was a true calling. I graduated with honors from Arizona State University and felt immense pride providing compassionate nursing care to those in need.
My journey, however, has been marked by significant challenges. In 2015, I came out as transgender. Living authentically was necessary for my well-being, but it came with immediate professional hardship. I witnessed an event that was a mandatory reportable event which I attempted to do the right thing by reporting what I witnessed (Suspected PREA). I was then subsequently reported to the Arizona Board of Nursing in what appeared to be either a retaliation or discrimination as the false allegations occurred only one week after coming out publicly as transgender online. This report to the board happened less than 48 hours after submitting my detailed report of the incident & other concerns to management.
I fought hard to self-advocate but had to go through a humiliating investigation without legal representation that lead to a mandatory humiliating psychological evaluation, drug testing (which I passed), and invasive scrutiny of my medical records…However a judgmental psychologist with outdated knowledge on LGBTQ issues recommended I was unsafe to practice despite no patient being harmed by my actions at my workplace, they took my license away… Which lead to my becoming homeless for a period of time.
It took me a year to secure legal representation to actually adequately defend myself, and that lead to a lengthy negotiation to get my nursing license back with probationary stipulations.
By 2017, I was finally working again while doing the work I loved finally with my legal name updated and was able to finally work as my authentic self which brought me immense joy.
After being employed successfully at a Skilled nursing facility for almost a year, I unfortunately experienced a severe workplace violence incident. A patient physical assault left me with a complex injury that required four surgeries and an arduous, multiple years-long recovery. A Conservative judge threw out my workers comp case depriving me of any compensation
My extended recovery prevented me from completing the required number of practice hours to renew my nursing license.
After negotiations, they have agreed that a comprehensive Nursing Refresher Course is required in order to renew my nursing license. (See below attached pictures).
However, I now face a critical, time-sensitive condition from the nursing board’s decision. I have been given just 30 days to enroll in and secure funding for this mandated course. If I cannot successfully pay the tuition and be enrolled within 30 days I will be in violation of the agreement with the board, and my nursing license will be revoked for 5 years.
If I can meet this deadline and complete this vocational rehabilitation process; I will then be able to renew my license for a full five years. This would empower me to then return to work.
This course is the only path forward for my career. This is where I humbly and urgently ask for your help. The funds raised here will go directly to the costs required to complete the course.
· Tuition and Fees for the online accredited Refresher course, ($3,450
· Required textbooks and online materials. ($150).
—my car needs also have a big repair, I’ve been stranded at my place for like 6 weeks and I may need to have a way to do new clinicals to shadow another nurse for clinical hours.
Your support doesn't just help me pass a test; it would enable me a chance for vocational rehabilitation, potential restoration of a cherished part of my identity, and allow to return work as a nurse. This could lead to restoration of my income for the next five years.
Any contribution, no matter the size, would bring me one step closer to meeting this deadline and putting my scrubs back on, and putting this all behind me finally. ⚕️
If you are unable to donate, sharing this campaign would mean the world to me.
Thank you greatly for believing in me, and I’ll always be dedicated to advocacy for marginalized communities.
With immense gratitude,
~ April <3
