To anyone who reads this — thank you, and God bless you.
It’s not easy asking for help, especially knowing so many others are struggling too. But I’ve reached a point where I don’t know what else to do.
My name is April, and I’m a single mom of three just trying to survive and keep my family afloat. The photo — these are my babies, the people I fight for every day.
I was married for almost 20 years as a military spouse, and since my divorce, life has been incredibly difficult to rebuild. My ex receives VA disability, which child support can’t garnish, so I’ve been doing my best on my own.
I work full-time and was also working part-time at Walmart until recently, when my hours were cut to just one 4-hour shift a week. I’m currently applying for other part-time work, but it’s been tough finding something that fits around my full-time schedule.
My children all struggle with serious mental health challenges including major depressive disorder, anxiety, and ADHD. I try to stay strong for them and help however I can.
My middle child was recently diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease that’s affecting his vision. There are two possible treatments — special contact lenses (about $3,000) or cross-linking surgery — but insurance won’t cover either. I desperately want to help him, but I simply can’t afford it.
Our only car, which I depend on for work and everything else, has been giving us ongoing problems — transmission, brakes, and more. I can’t replace it because of poor credit and the $3,000 down payment most places require.
I make too much to qualify for assistance, but not enough to stay ahead. Rent keeps climbing, groceries are expensive, and I’m living paycheck to paycheck just trying to keep the lights on.
Since 2014, life has felt like one hardship after another — losing my grandmother, my little brother to suicide, and my mother; then going through divorce and the pandemic. Every time I stand back up, something else seems to knock me down — but I’m still fighting.
Just recently, I went in for what I thought would be a simple oil change ($80) and was told I needed a new CV joint/drive axle and brakes all around, costing $1,250 I didn’t have to spare.
I’m asking for help to get caught up — to help pay rent, utilities, groceries, car repairs, and simply to breathe again. I feel like I’m on a sinking ship and just need a hand to stay above water.
If you’re able to help — even a small amount — please know how deeply I appreciate you.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for taking the time to read our story and for helping me keep hope alive for my family.
