My name is Aoife Rankin and I have been battling chronic Lyme disease for over 12 years. Since 2013, I have endured:

• five major surgeries for debilitating chronic pain.

• bouts of crippling fatigue and weakness, making the simplest daily tasks overwhelming.

• many other distressing symptoms including sleep apnoea, and Tachycardia causing chest pain and palpitations.

• reoccurring Lyme flares which induce nausea, vomiting, severe weakness, excruciating pain and other unbearable symptoms.

For the past 2 years, I have followed the triple therapy antibiotic treatment, but it has not cured my symptoms. Worse still, the Lyme disease is now becoming resistant to the treatment leaving me sicker than ever and in desperate need to get specialised treatment abroad as soon as possible.

St George hospital in Germany, one of the world’s leading hospitals for chronic Lyme disease has agreed to treat me with a targeted and intensive in-patient 5 week program.

However, this treatment (including travel costs) will cost over €45,000, and my health insurance has refused to cover me. This is despite ‘treatment abroad’ being covered under my policy and referral letters from both my consultant and my GP and test results confirming my diagnosis. I have paid into private health insurance for 20 years, yet now, when I need it the most, I am left with no choice but to turn to crowdfunding to save my health and my future.

My journey with Lyme disease has been long, painful, and life-altering—one that I would not wish upon anyone!

I desperately want to get better. I want to work again, regain my independence, and live a life free from constant suffering.
