On Saturday May 2, 2026, during what should have been just another thrilling basketball game, tragedy struck. Anthony Russo, [Son of Donna & Joe Russo (Portland High School Boys Basketball Coach)], a dedicated young referee known for his passion for the game and commitment to fair play, suffered from a debilitating left sided hemorrhagic stroke. This left Anthony with full right-sided speech & physical paralysis. In an instant, his life was turned upside down.

Anthony was immediately taken to a Waterville Hospital, then transported to the Maine Medical center ICU. Anthony was at Maine Medical Center until May 11th when he was moved to The New England Rehabilitation Center.

This unexpected health crisis has left Anthony facing numerous challenges, including extensive medical treatments, rehabilitation, inability to work and a long road to recovery. As a community, we have witnessed his unwavering commitment to youth sports and now it’s our turn to rally around Anthony.

As long time Members of the Maine Basketball Community and friends of Anthony and the Russo Family, myself and my husband, Maggie & Teddy Downey and friends, Tony & Carissa Robb, wish to support Anthony by raising funds on his behalf. Funds raised will go directly to Anthony to help cover medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and lost income for Anthony during this challenging time. NO contribution is too small, and all funds raised will go directly towards supporting Anthony on his journey to recovery.

Let’s come together to show our appreciation for all the games Anthony has officiated and the positive influence he has had on countless athletes. Your generosity can make a huge difference in his life. Thank you for your support, love, and prayers during this difficult time.

Together, we can hopefully help Anthony get back on his feet and back to the game he loves!

Thank you,

Maggie & Teddy Downey
